Do you like steak?
If you dont mind paying a bit for it, the Cedars Steak House in the Foxwoods Resort & Casino is a great place for a very good steak.
The restaurant is located in the casino complex near the Great Cedar Hotel. Its located near several other restaurants and the exit to the rear parking garage at Foxwoods.
Reservations are almost always required. Ive yet to come across the restaurant at a point where I could just walk in and get seated. Id suggest either calling ahead or stopping in when you first arrive to make your reservations. That way youll be guaranteed a time for your meal as opposed to having to wait for it. You can also make reservations online now through the Foxwoods website.
What to expect
As you enter the Cedars Steak House from the concourse you come into a large waiting room. To the right is the dining room and straight ahead is a bar and lounge area.
If you already have reservations most likely they will ask you to wait a moment (there are plenty of cushy chairs near a gas fireplace) while they prepare your table and youll be seated in the dining room within a few minutes.
Without the reservations, you may be getting to know those cushy chairs better, as its likely you are going to have to wait for a while.
Ambiance & Service
The Cedars Steak House is considered one of Foxwoods Gourmet restaurants and the design, layout and lighting of the restaurant reinforces this. On our first visit we were pleasantly surprised at how nice the restaurant was and how good the service was. Subsequent visits only reinforced this.
The dining room is comfortable and cozy but also large enough to accommodate fairly large groups and a number of diners. Lighting is bright enough so that its not hard to see your menus or your meals but not so harsh that its too bright.
From the moment you walk in the service is good. You are greeted and then brought to your table. Once you are seated you are greeted by your head waiter but a whole group of waiters and waitresses actually serve you. They make sure your drinks are full and that you have whatever you need throughout your entire meal. The meals themselves are well paced and we havent experienced too much of a wait as we made our way through our appetizers and/or salads then meals and then desserts.
What can I eat?
It is the Cedars Steak House so of course there is plenty of steak on the menu. My personal favorite is either cut of the prime rib. This is also one of the few meals that come with a side (most of the menu is an a la carte menu) so I like the fact that I dont have to add other side. The prime rib has always come out well cooked and is very tasty.
Besides that there is filet mignon, Kansas City and New York sirloins, ribeye, and porterhouse steaks. Not quite in the steak mood? Theres pork chops, veal and lamb chops and grilled chicken.
Wait, dont want beef at all? There are a number of seafood dishes to choose from including lobster, salmon and scallops to name a few.
But why go to a steakhouse and get seafood? Weve always stuck with the steaks and weve really enjoyed the meals that we have had here.
Want something to start your meal with? There are quite a few appetizers including oysters, ribs, and shrimp and several different salads to choose from. I really like their Caesar salad, it has an excellent dressing and the lettuce has always been fresh and crisp. As for the appetizers, my partner likes the shrimp cocktail, but there really isnt anything that grabs my attention its almost all seafood and Im not a seafood fan. Theres also soup, but we havent every tried the soup.
Most of the entrees either come a la carte or have a very small side. You really have to go to the sides menu where you can choose from various vegetables, potatoes, and other sides. Thats one reason I go with the prime rib it comes with potatoes and a vegetable already, so I dont have to worry about the sides.
As for dessert, Cedars has a short dessert menu that includes favorites at most restaurants. Theres cheesecake, a chocolate lava cake and a fruit plate to name a few. Weve usually skipped over dessert (save a piece of cheesecake here and there) since the meal is more than enough food. I do however get a cup of coffee usually, which Ive always enjoyed here.
Prices?
Ah
well, nothing at Foxwoods is cheap and the Cedars Steak House is no exception.
The appetizers average about $15 each, while the soups are around $8 and the salads at about $10.
For the meals, most of the specialties (the entrée meals) are near $30 (except for the lobster which is $75). For the steaks youre around $50 each. To expand those meals the side dishes are all about $5 each.
Weve ended up spending around $50 or so per person when we have eaten there. None of us are really big drinkers, so there hasnt been much alcohol and we usually also skip an appetizer and maybe share one dessert.
Final Thoughts
Is the Cedars Steak House worth the price? I think so, at least in the realm of the other Foxwoods restaurants that are similar in price. You will get a good meal with excellent service.
Is it the best steak youll ever have, not likely, but it is very good.
The prices might be high for some folks, but the other gourmet restaurants in Foxwoods have similar prices and since I really like a good steak, this is the restaurant I gravitate towards when Im looking for a good meal at Foxwoods.
Overall if you like steak, you are at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino, and you dont mind spending a few extra dollars, I think you should check out the Cedars Steak House. For the occasional treat I think its well worth.
