Practically ever since my teenage daughter, Kelsey, was old enough to hold a Barbie doll in her hand, we've been purchasing the special collector's edition Holiday Barbies throughout the 1990's up to the current year's edition. And even though my 14 year old daughter has long outgrown her fascination with anything Barbie (although she still adores pink!), I continue to purchase one of these new dolls for her every year. To begin her newest collection in the year 2000, I purchased this gorgeous Celebration Barbie with it's beautiful blonde hair and golden winter gown as a traditional holiday gift that same year as she knows she'll find a Holiday Barbie under the tree every Christmas. Read on to find out more about this special Barbie doll that's no longer available in stores but can be found at auction sites like ebay for a reasonable price.
~~~The Barbie Doll~~~
To help symbolize the holiday spirit of the 21st Century, Mattel decided to market a new set of Holiday Barbie just in time for the new millennium with this special edition Celebration Barbie in the year 2000. Because of the popularity of the previous decade's Holiday Barbie series, starting a new collection seemed good for business at the time. But there were plenty of these new dolls to go around, so shortages were few and far between unlike previous years' dolls had been. According to product advertising, she's a lovely holiday dream come true. She's the absolutely breathtaking Celebration Barbie doll. Sure to make the first holiday of the new Millennium something special to remember, she wears a lavish, glittering golden gown with a full taffeta underskirt. Her golden, shimmering bodice and luxuriously soft, faux fur collar add an extraordinary princess-like aura to her beauty. Holding a dazzling ornament, which pays tribute to the year 2000, she is a wonderful way to commemorate this momentous year. Celebration Barbie. The perfect holiday gift for some lucky little girl, or a dear friend who's young at heart. Although now it seems more logical that a doll created in the year 2000 should be made as the last one in the older series, Mattel as well as countless other companies jumped on the bandwagon a year early and flooded the market with lots of Y2K memorabilia like this Celebration Barbie as just one of many examples. So there were plenty of them to go around.
But even though there were many of these Celebration Barbie dolls produced at the time, she's still very beautiful and worthy of being first and of the collector's title. At the top of her silky smooth traditional long blonde hair is a golden crown with gold trimmed diamond studs decorate her ears. Her make-up consists of warm colors, including a rich burgandy lipstick outlining her smile. Around her bare shoulders is a white faux fur cape which covers up most of the golden snowflake necklace she's also wearing. The fitted gold shiny bodice is trimmed with silver snowflakes and meets her full taffeta skirt with flaring grace. Held in her left hand is the special commemorative Y2K silver and white ornament trimmed with silver snowflakes, a gold ribbon and gold 2000 printed across the front. She has a gold trimmed diamond ring on her right hand and is wearing golden shoes to match her winter wonderland costume. So although white gold seems to be the most popular choice for the new decade, this Celebration Barbie with her original yellow gold trim still made a great choice for the first in the new Holiday series as silver and/or white gold models were soon to follow. An African American version as well as the Caucasian one described here was also made.
~~~Packaging, Price, & Availability~~~
With her stunning golden and ivory gown that defines a new elegance for the holiday season, this lovely Celebration Barbie retailed for well over $30.00 when she was first launched in late summer, 2000, but she can now be picked up in the original box in new condition on ebay for around $15 to $20. The rounded box itself is trimmed in gold and features a clear front panel for viewing the doll without actually having to open it up. However, a doll stand is included for those wishing to display their Holiday Barbie Doll collection. We keep all of ours inside the original box, which stands upright anyway for viewing. She stands in front of a pretty gold colored background inside the box and her dress is fluffy and full. And her gorgeous golden gown as well as the 2000 holiday ornament and other details can easily be seen without disrupting her elegant pose. ~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
While this 2000 special edition of this Celebration Barbie has long left the shelves of regular retail stores several years ago, look for her in specialty collector shops as well as online at places like ebay as she's really not that expensive when compared to some of her rare predecessors. And since she's the first new doll starting the new Holiday collection for the Y2K decade, then she's a must have choice for your daughter, granddaughter, or even yourself! For I remember just how much Kelsey enjoyed opening up her new doll even though she was already 10 at the time and was moving on to more grown up things like clothes and music CD's. So before the holiday rush begins soon, treat that special someone to this Celebration Barbie as well as the other models that followed soon after. For she truly is a golden treasure worthy of her crown. Good luck and happy online toy shopping :-)
