| sneddren's Full Review: Center Gateway (G15) |
We just adopted a dog (a 4 month old Chocolate Lab) and dogs being dogs, he's into everything. This wouldn't be a problem but we also have two cats and they have come to expect that THEY own the house (notwithstanding the mortgage payments they don't make)...the puppy is about as good as a puppy is going to get when it comes to cats, but they still are skittish around him and he tends to follow them around. We wanted to make sure that they had at least one safe place in the house, somewhere to run to in case the puppy crosses the line. We also wanted to make sure that he couldn't get into the room where the cats have their litter box and food/water. So we bought the Kidco G15 to block the doorway of the cats' room. I set it up so there's about a 6 inch gap at the bottom and so far it's working exactly as planned. The puppy can't get under, over or through the gate but the cats can walk right under it and be free of puppy hassles.
It was a breeze to install...it has 4 pressure pads on each corner that just get pushed against the doorway and the gate also has a swinging door in the center that is very sturdy but easy to open so we can go into the room whenever we want. This is working so well that we're going to buy at least one more to keep the cats happy and the puppy out of trouble. The only concern I have is the gate isn't very tall and when the puppy turns into a dog, he will likely be able to hop right over the gate. But otherwise, this gate has impressed me. The strength of construction is truly impressive.
Update: 2/2/02
The Model G15 gate is a center open gate that can fit doorways between 29 1/4" to 37 1/2" wide. The gate kit comes standard with two extension kits that allow the gate to be used in doorways as wide as 48 1/8", though the manufacturer warns that using the extensions may compromise the strength of the gate (at the widest settings). Most doorways with a single door are 30-33" wide, so the extensions will rarely be used. Nevertheless, the extensions are included in the kit, as is all of the hardware needed to install-the pressure mounts as well as a wrench and even a pressure gauge to make sure that the door handle takes the right pressure to open. VERY safety oriented. The pressure mounts are fantastic. Instead of using bolts and having to drill into the doorway, you just screw out the pressure pads on the 4 corners of the gate and it holds the gate in place. It's a lot stronger than I expected and it doesn't damage the doorway at all.
There are 2 versions of this gate, the center open and the side open. The center open works great for doorways while the side open would be better for stairways, as it works like a swingaway door.
