Pros: Leather, Soft, Diameter, Control, Feel.
Something has been slowly happening the last decade. That is the return of functional and performance based fitness. New Crossfit gyms look like turn of the century gyms with rings, kettle bells, pull up bars, and medicine balls.
Some inexpensive medicine ball options exist. Spend a few bucks on a bag of playground sand and duct tape. Put the sand in a basket ball and tape it up like crazy. This will work. But every so often you get sand in your eyes doing wall balls and it is time for a new tape job.
Another option are the vinyl or rubbery medicine balls. The kind that are slippery, bouncy, and hard. Some are too small in diameter for there weight, while others have a good diameter. Either way, the properties of this leather ball are better.
I was too cheap to get a heavy leather ball. I finally did after over a year of the sand ball and a rubbery, vinyl ball. It is well worth it. It has the softer, less bouncy, less slippery, and larger diameter properties that it should.
I have a soft spot for Century and Everlast products. But, there are other options for you for balls with similar properties. If you spend some more money, you can get a better medicine ball by going with a Dynamax. When I say better, I mean more suited to cross fit.
For less money, Muscle Driver USA has their line of leather medicine balls on sale. I have dealt with them, and they have reasonable shipping charges, super fast shipping, and make a product comparable to this in quality, but at a better price. The Muscle Driver ones are red and black, and show use and dirt more. The black Century ball is all black and hides this more.
It will take a while to get that broken in, old school, used, ancient medicine ball feel. But even so, this is preferable to a rubbery, vinyl ball. The rubbery balls may have a little more precise accuracy in there weight, but does it really matter is you have an 11.8 or 12.1 pound ball versus exactly 12 pounds. It is not like dumbells or weight plates where you are balancing them.
Go old school cool with leather. Support Century or Everlast, they have been making old school gym and martial arts/boxing stuff forever.
