Pros:Long term trusted mouthwash brand; #1 in hospitals.
Cons:Limited availability in stores.
The Bottom Line: If most strong minty flavored mouthwashes make you gag, then this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle is an acceptable alternative to try.
As long as I can remember, I've never been a fan of mint flavored products. As a child, I often got car sick and still remember to this day how I felt: waves of nausea in a hot car in winter time with the smell of my Mom's minty chewing gum filling the air. Funny how certain smells can produce bad memories even decades later! So obviously, no minty chewing gum for me. I buy the orange flavored Tic Tacs and not the minty ones. No minty flavored toothpastes, either. And especially no minty flavored mouthwashes. That can pose a challenge, however, since many oral hygiene products are strongly flavored with mint. Long ago, I discovered this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle and have been purchasing it ever since. Read on to find out more about a long trusted brand that has always claimed to be #1 in hospitals and is a nice alternative to mint haters like myself.

There's always one person in the bunch that has to be different than all the rest. That would easily be me. What person in their right mind doesn't like mint? It's in candy, chocolate, and even ice cream. What a way to ruin perfectly good food, I say. But to get back on topic, this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle has been a staple oral hygiene product in my household for almost as long as I've been married. And trust me, that's a LONG time :-) According to product advertising, this is the #1 brand in hospitals. Cepacol Antibacterial kills the germs that cause bad breath. Cepacol Gold is the original mouthwash with a refreshing blend of cinnamon, eucalyptol and mint oils, and a cooling touch of menthol. For a fresher, cleaner mouth, use Cepacol as an important part of your daily oral care regimen. While they do mention this mouthwash being flavored with mint oils, it's not the strongly overwhelming type of spearmint or peppermint that most other products contain. It's very light and doesn't burn near as bad as products like Listerine. Yes, I'm officially a wimp when it comes to the use of oral hygiene products! Still, this mouthwash is strong enough to get the job done without gagging me with the awful strong taste of mint. Of course it doesn't taste great, but the medicinal type flavor is more than tolerable. The menthol leaves a cooling type feeling in your mouth so that it feels cleaner than with just brushing alone. It's yellow in color and contains Ceepryn to help kill those icky bad breath germs. So use this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle every time you brush if fresher breath is the goal.
~~~Price & Availability~~~
I used to purchase this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle at my local Wal-Mart until a few years ago when they suddenly stopped carrying it. My usual grocery store didn't have it either, so I started to panic! Luckily, I finally located it online at cvs.com, where the 24 ounce size currently sells for $4.59 each. I started ordering in bulk after trying other brands in vain, including the cinnamon flavored Scope that set my mouth on fire! Ack. Maybe it's just what you get used to over the years, but I'd be more apt to avoid using mouthwash altogether if I were forced to chose another brand. They used to sell tiny 4 ounce bottles that were perfect for travel but I've not seen any of these for sale in a long time. I work in a hospital but ours must know that Cepacol is supposed to be the #1 brand used by hospitals as I've never seen it used where I work. So while it's been around for a long time, this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle in the Gold color is still the one I reach for first time and time again.
One would assume using a mouthwash would require no directions for use, but then again one would be very wrong. Here's what they say about this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle: TO OPEN SAFETY CAP: Remove printed seal. Do not use if seal is missing or broken. Squeeze both raised finger pads and continue to squeeze while turning. TO CLOSE: Turn cap until it locks completely. Rinse or gargle full strength and then spit out before or after brushing or as directed by physician or dentist. Do not swallow. In case of accidental ingestion, seek professional assistance or contact a poison control center immediately. Do not use in children under 6 years of age. Children over 6 should be supervised when using Cepacol. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. There's a large, white lid that screws onto the clear plastic bottle that can be used for measuring out enough mouthwash for each use. About half way up the lid is a line going all the way around but I find this to be way too much and usually fill the lid half way to the line instead. I've worn braces for 2 years now, so proper oral hygiene is very important to the health of my teeth and gums right now. So there are often days that I brush 3 or 4 times daily and then follow with this mouthwash. Just swish the liquid around inside the mouth for several seconds and then gargle before spitting it back out. I make sure I brush my tongue thoroughly as well to get rid of as many germs as possible. My mouth always feels fresh and clean after using this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle, so I know it has to be working. Without the tolerable taste I've grown used to over the years, finding an acceptable alternative would be nearly impossible for my picky taste otherwise.
If you feel as I do that most minty flavored mouthwashes are just too strong, then this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle just might be a tolerable alternative. The slight hint of cinnamon masks any minty flavor it has and the menthol leaves your mouth feeling cool and refreshed. There's very little burning to speak of as this mouthwash kills bad breath germs with regular use. Add this as an important last step to your oral hygiene routine for fresher and cleaner breath. Brush and floss daily as your dentist recommends and then swish and gargle this mouthwash several times a day as needed. I need all the help I can get to keep my braces as clean as possible even though my orthodontist always comments on what a good brusher I am. Still, I can't help but thinking the use of this mouthwash sure can't hurt either! In conclusion, I highly recommend this Cepacol Antibacterial Mouthwash and Gargle for anyone that just can't tolerate the mainstream brands and flavors. It gets five stars from me even though it's sometimes a challenge to locate in stores or online. Good luck and happy swishing :-)
