Little bowl of crunchy cereal, deliciously bad for me
Written: Jan 13 '08 (Updated Jan 31 '08)
Pros:tasty, crunchy, cinnamon, no corn syrup
Cons:sugar, lots of sodium, wheat allergy alert
The Bottom Line: I eat them by the handful, who needs milk?
Who does not love cinnamon toast? Well, these little cereal squares are almost the same thing. They are about half an inch square and very thin, and they stay crunchy in milk longer than flakes, but not as long as puffs. (Puffs are those little round balls of cereal, like Corn Puffs and Cocoa Puffs.)
The food police will probably arrest me for eating these, but they are worth the price. They do cost more in these little cups, too, but they are so handy for taking with me on the go.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch is another fine whole grain cereal from General Mills. The only problem is, most of that whole grain is wheat, so if you have allergies, you cannot enjoy this tasty treat. They also have some rice in them.
They are kind of like wheat thins crackers, but about a fourth the size and thinner. And sweeter, too.
The sugar tends to fall off of them, making a mess on my desk. I like to eat them right out of the box, without milk.
Like most pre-sweetened cereals, Cinnamon Toast Crunch actually has less sugar than I would add to a plain cereal. In fact, it has less sugar than Cocoa Puffs.
Nutrition
One serving (3/4 cup, 31 grams) has 130 calories and contains 3 grams of fat, including half a gram of saturated fat and no trans fat. It also has 25 grams of carbohydrate, including 10 grams of sugar, plus one gram of protein. They have 220 milligrams of sodium and 45 milligrams of potassium.
Milk adds additional calories, fat and protein.
I do not eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch for good nutrition. I eat them because I like them. Hover, they actually have less sugar than Cocoa Puffs, even though they taste much sweeter. In addition, they do not contain corn syrup, and Cocoa Puffs do have corn syrup. I have read that corn syrup is a cheap sweetener that is bad for you.
The main ingredients are whole grain wheat, sugar, rice flour, and canola and/or rice bean oil.
They are fortified with vitamins and minerals.
Recommendation
If you have a wheat allergy, or if you do not like cinnamon, then this cereal is not for you.
I like it. Like all cereals, it is high in carbs, but it is not bad as an occasional treat.
The only problem I have is that one serving is never enough. I can almost eat the whole box in one sitting. They taste that good.
