The Bottom Line: Excellent choice for great food in a terrific atmosphere.

On a Friday night around 5:30 we went to Chadaka Thai at the recommendation of our daughter.

Chadaka Thai is located at 310 N San Fernando Blvd (Cross Street: Magnolia Boulevard) in Los Angeles (Burbank), California.

They take reservations and can be reached at 818-848-8520.

They accept all major credit cards.

Chadaka Thai is open from 11:00a.m. to 11:00p.m. daily.

In general we found parking in Los Angeles to be manageable. In this case that was true as well. There are free lots or ticket validation lots but there is also street parking in front of Chadaka and that is where we parked. If you find a one-hour limit area go to Palm or Orange Grove free lots.

They offer lunch specials from 11:00a.m. to 3:00p.m and a happy hour Monday through Friday from 3:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. The appetizers, beer, house wines and well cocktails are 1/2 price.

About Chadaka Thai:

Chadaka Thai has been family-operated since 1975. All their dishes are prepared Thai-style which according to the website www.chadaka.com means they use only the freshest authentic ingredients--no premixed curry pastes or frozen vegetables. They personally select our seafood and meats daily and use fresh Thai herbs whenever available. They make their curry pastes and sauces from scratch.

Décor and service:

Chadaka Thai is truly a beautiful but understated restaurant. You won’t find chandeliers here. As we approached we saw an outside sitting area which was part of the building and had an extension of the roof covering the area.

As we entered I was impressed by the smells and the ambiance. We were immediately greeted and taken to a table with a long couch style seating arrangement that went from one end to the other. The same was true on the other side of the room. In the middle were tables for four.

Each table was lit with a candle and we found a cloth napkin in one of the most unusual shapes I’ve seen sitting in our tea cups. The restaurant was dimly lit. To me it looked like the color scheme was black and white but I really tried to look closely and it seemed that the tables were a very dark brown and the white slightly off white. Looking up I couldn’t help but notice what looked like a patchwork quilt tile set into the ceiling. Actually these are Kimono style patchwork.

The U-shaped bar has square seats and is a lovely area. A large Buddha sits on or in the area where the alcohol is.
Our servers were very pleasant though not overly friendly. He was extremely competent bringing over water when needed and making sure everything was alright. I took a lot of my food home and I noted that it was packaged perfectly.

The food:

The menu had me at Mee Krob which I had been having a hankering for and couldn’t find it in my area in Massachusetts.

Mee Krob comes as an appetizer for $6.00 but since it was happy hour it was $4.00. I couldn’t believe the size of this dish. I thought there was a mistake and it was a main course. Probably I am the only one who could eat it as a main course because many would find it too sweet. Mee Krob is sweet crispy rice vermicelli with shrimp and chicken. There were a few shrimp in the dish and pieces of non-white chicken but as an appetizer I was more than happy. The dish was sticky, crispy and wonderful. I brought ½ of it home and ate it a couple of hours later. It was just as good heated up in a microwave.

I ordered fresh spring rolls which are different from regular spring rolls. I don’t like them as much but the “ideal for the health-conscious” got me to order them to counter act the effects of the Mee Krob. They were quite good just not a favorite of mine. The outside was not fried. Rather it is dough like with cabbage, carrots and mushroom inside. They serve a peanut dip which was a bit spicy for me but added a nice taste even though it bit me a bit. We got four of these good sized rolls.

I decided to get an order of brown rice with a side of peanut sauce. A large bowl of rice was $1.00; the peanut sauce was $2.00. I also brought 1/2 of this home. I figured out that this was short grain brown rice which made it the best rice I can remember having. It had a nutty, slightly crunchy taste to it. I got the peanut sauce because I usually like it on bland brown rice but it really wasn’t necessary on Chadaka Thai’s brown rice.

My husband had been battling a cold so he just got soup called Tom Kha which he liked a lot. It had coconut milk, mushrooms, lemongrass, galangal root and kaffir lime leaves. A slightly larger than cup size with chicken or tofu (He got tofu.) was $4.00; $5.50 with shrimp.

My daughter got Chadaka vegetables with chicken for $9.00 (choose beef, pork or tofu as well.) or add $3.00 for shrimp. She had nothing left to take home.

Chadaka Thai offers dishes such as spicy catfish fillet for $12.00; pad Thai ($10.00); snow crab fried rice ($10); and green pear salad for $9.50.

My rating:

Chadaka Thai was excellent. I have absolutely nothing to complain about! The food was wonderful; the service very good; the ambiance superb.

Use this restaurant for a drink at the bar, a date, a family meal or anything you can think of. Soft music was playing in the background. It was very pretty and added to the ambiance since it had a Thai/Indian sound to it and was soft.

Please feel free to leave me a question or comment.
