G,

Clint still don't know how to cut his film down to usable length, leaving about 20 minutes of chaff in. That's been a frequent complaint of mine on his work, too.

I suppose the editors have a hard time saying no when the director is Clint Eastwood. But yeah, a little trimming here and there would have improved the end product. It's still good, but not great.

Jan,

Not a parent or know the story, either, but I am a fan of really good movies, especially when they tell a true story. I would also be distracted by Jolie's thinness. Makes you wonder if she's in pain. Thanks for reviewing.

I think you might like the film - it's very well done. The wardrobe department does a decent job covering up her figure (impressive since most would try to exploit it, seeing it as some sort of good thing in our screwed up society) but she does look too thin.

Brian,

You would recommend the film to any parent? I grant you, you are one, but so are we, and -- there's no way it would be a good idea to let Cindy see this movie. It's probably excellent, and would freak her the hell out. (It would freak me out, except i've made the mistake of spending the last 20 years being political, meaning that extraordinary incompetence and heartlessness just remind me of the last dozen news stories i've read, not to mention occasional businesses i've dealth with.)

Actually, yes, I would. I don't think it would freak her out. For one thing, the period details are so well done that it doesn't bear even a small resemblance to "our" world. Christine Collins was also a strong, strong woman who empowered a lot of people. I don't want to give the story away, but she's not a historic figure only because of what was done to her, she's historic for what she did about it - very, very publicly. And remember, the authorities who tortured her had nothing to do with the disappearance of her son - that part might be more freaky.

Angelina Jolie's the latest actress to fall into starvation? If the tragedy of Christina Ricci didn't make it obvious: Hollywood has got to start paying its stars AT LEAST minimum wage, and stop using all those silly exemptions. I know all those salaries look painful when you list them as Expenses, guys, but the extra money that audiences pay when your stars have actual flesh (especially boobs and hips) is _larger_ than the cost of fortified gruel. And the actresses wouldn't seem so cold and distant if they spent more time thinking about their characters and less time thinking about omelets and how to steal a giant cake from the store without being caught.

I suspect that Angelina spends her meager earnings feeding her seventy two children. They can get by on the gruel, it's just not enough for her, too. She's a selfless parent, daydreaming not about cake for herself, but which island she's going to rent the next time she gives birth.

It makes me tear up just thinking about it.

Marie,

I'm glad you thought this was a good movie even though this isn't a fun, happy movie.
It is horrible what she went through.

No, it isn't fun or happy - I definitely needed a dose of low-brow humor after watching this one. But it is good.

I noticed how thin Jolie was too. Jolie lost a lot of weight after her mother died and I think this was the first movie she made after that. I think she was still dealing with that during the filming.

She looks pretty emaciated here - she looks much better now. I'm glad she put some weight on, she looked almost ill.

Liz,

It's terrifying that something like this actually happened. It sounds like a good film, but a difficult watch. I'm not a big fan of Angelina, but I can stand her as long as she's not speaking with a phony accent; hopefully she's not in this one.

It's a weird story - hard to believe until you watch it play out. The obvious period details help make it less horrifying.

No accent for Angelina - which I agree is a good thing.
