darienblue's Full Review: Chapter I: A New Beginning by The Moffatts
People usually associate The Moffatts with country or Hanson. Well they are neither. Not anymore! After picking up a few instruments these teenage brothers have changed their sound to 'edgy pop'.
This album, released in 1998, is the Moffatts first album that they play their own instruments on.
With catchy songs like "Crazy" these boys are rocking. They add a little big band to "Say'n I Love You" and there's pop in "Until You Loved Me". "Misery" is hitting the alternative side. Can't forget "I'll Be There For You" and "Girl Of My Dreams"! Those songs are great!
This album will never be taken out of your player! It has songs for everyone! Chapter One is a 'play all the way' CD where you can listen to it and not skip a song! It should be picked up by everyone for everyone.
Totally high volume music! You may never get these songs out of your head (or forget that they exist anyways).
Every time I'm feeling sad I listen to this CD and it brings my spirits right up.
The Moffatts are Scott Moffatt (20) and his triplet brothers Clint (19) Bob (19) and Dave (19). When they wrote this album they were aged 14 and 15.

The boys have been singing since they were three, and when they started out, they sang country music. Back then, Scott sang lead, and he sounded so much like Dolly Parton it was scary.
In 1996 the boys decided that they wanted to play the type of music they actually listened to, so they learned to play instruments and their sound became more pop/rock.
In 1998 they released the album Chapter 1. It was released in two different versions. The Canadian Version has a few extra songs, however the US version is the best version. It contains some of the newer songs the Moffatts had written.
Their first single on the album was I'll Be There For you, which is an upbeat happy song about friendship. At this time in their career, they were compared to Hanson and it was claimed that they had copied Hanson, though even the Hansons have announced that when they were little they used to watch the Moffatts on TV and want to "do that."
Other singles released from this album were If Life Is So Short, Until You Loved Me, Crazy and Misery.
The Moffatts do not sound like Hanson, no matter how similar people say they are. The Moffatts voices are deeper, especially Scotts.
The boys are all Canadians, who grew up in Nashville, Calgary and Edmonton. Bob and Clint are identical twins, while Dave is the fraternal twin.
What I really like about this CD is that there's an amazing part to every song, just before the last chorus, in the bridge that just makes your heart jump.
Sometimes I just dont listen to this CD because I get depressed that the Moffatt's arent still a band anymore and that they dont like the pop music they used to play. (Well they say that anyways...) I think maybe they're just trying to be cool and move to rock. But this album is pure pop (except for a bonus track and Wild at heart)
Until You Loved Me
This song just amazed the heck out of me the first time I heard it. It's a pop song, (now lets not be confusing the Moffatt sound with the Hanson sound) but the boys play their own instruments so it doesnt have the tacky boy band sound to it.
"Never knew what love was, until you loved me, never knew what love was, oh yeah, cuz it feels so good some times, and it feels so bad sometimes, the way you love me, love me"
- Lead singer: Scott
Misery
My favourite song on the album, this one has a more edgy feel to it. You can hear the electric guitar much more in this song than the others, and it's a beautiful song about a guy who misses his girl and is miserable without her.
"Misery is what I feel, when you're not around, so I can't heal, Misery is what I feel, is what I feeeeel."
"When I touch you, can you feel it? When I need you, can you give it? When I look in your eyes, can you see me? When I fall. Will you catch me?"
- Lead singer: Scott
Miss You Like Crazy
This is the ultimate love song. You will fall in love with it as I have. It has become my mums favourite song and that is saying something. She will turn it up in the car and play it full blast because she loves it so much. It will make your heart melt and you will think about someone you miss. With such smooth vocal harmonies you will listen to this one over and over again.
"I miss you like crazy, even more than words can say, I miss you like crazy, every minute of every day, Girl Im so down, when your love's not around, I miss you... I miss you like crazy"
- Lead singer: Dave
Written All Over My Heart
This is one I like to listen to in the car. It sounds a bit like Misery, has the same sombre tone to it. I really like the bridge in this song. It's good for when you're driving in the car at night. Turn it up really loud and it's an amazing song.
"Here we go again, I can't hold it anymore. I can't hold in the pain. The pain has knocked down this old door. I don't know what to do; I don't know what to do, about you."
- Lead singer: Scott
Girl Of My Dreams
This song was the Moffatts attempt to show people they weren't about country music anymore. In fact, I think it shows more their pop side, instead of the new rock sound they've developed recently. It's a really catchy song this one.
"All alone, in my room. Wishing that you were here. Without you in my arms, I'm holding back all these tears. Without you in my life, I'll never be satisfied."
- Lead singer: Scott
Say'n I love you
Another fast paced pop song. Not an absolute favourite, but it's still pretty cool.
"Say'n I love you, it's the hardest thing to do, and if I ever do, girl I'll always be true."
- Lead singer: Scott
Crazy
A catchy song, verging between pop and rock. It has a nice little chorus, and it's awesome when performed live.
"I see you there, I watch you fly, if I could be you I would touch the sky. But here I am, and there you are, don't you know it's driving me, so crazy."
- Lead singer: Scott
I'll Be There For You
The Moffatts first single off of this album. Dave sings this one, thus the younger voice. A bubbly pop song that is quite sure to be in your head for a while.
"I saw you this morning with that look in your eye; I hate to see you looking like you're lost and lonely. It isn't easy when you're all by yourself, don't you worry, I hear you, cuz I know what it's like."
- Lead singer: Dave
Love
Acoustic on the album, but when played live, with the full band it is incredible. Scotts voice makes you melt. Literally. This song made me like Scott better than Bob (who used to be my favourite). The most beautiful song on the album, with violins and a synthesiser used toward the end.
"The first time I saw you, you were walking down the beach at night. With the waves bowing down to you in the bright moonlight. Well it must have been a signal from up above. Cuz deep in my heart I knew that it was love."
- Lead singer: Scott
Wild At Heart
Imagine 'smells like teen spirit'. This has pretty much the same intro as that. That should give you an idea of how it sounds.
"I don't like sitting around. I don't like beating the ground. I wanna hear the sound of me and you just running around. I'm gonna make it. I'm gonna break it. I'm gonna fly in the sky everywhere that I go! I wanna be wild. Wild at heart."
- Lead singer: Scott
Raining In My Mind
More of a pop song, this one, but still a really nice song. Great to sing to.
"I don't know if you'll ever change you've been raining since December. I guess it hasnt been all that long but it seems like it's been forever. I can't stop if I'm pouring down cuz you're just like the weather, but I'll be just fine cuz I know you're shining until that time you're still raining in my mind."
- Lead singer: Scott
If Life Is So Short
A simply gorgeous and heart melting song. It really makes you think, this one. I cannot describe in words how beautiful this song is, so download it for yourself if you want to hear. Or even better, buy the album and support the Moffatts.
"Isn't it funny how time seems to slip away so fast? One minute you're happy the other you're sad. But if you give me one more chance, to show my love for you is true, I'll stand by your side your whole life through."
- Lead singer: Scott
HIDDEN TRACKS Frustration
A beautiful song, recorded live, featuring only Scott and his guitar. It gives real insight into Scotts mind, and you can see that he's deeper than he is portrayed.
"There's no windows in this place, for me to show my weary face. Rage I hold within my soul at times I cannot control."
- Lead singer: Scott
Over The Rainbow
Probably the most 'alternative' song on the record. The lyrics are very basic, and the whole point of the song is the catchy base line throughout, and a chance for the guys to just jam.
"Over the rainbow, there's a pot of gold. There's a pot of gold, for me."
- Lead singer: Scott
