Yeah, that about sums Wilbur up. Long before the world was entranced by the sheep-herding skills of a pig named Babe, a pig named Wilbur captured the hearts of young and old alike. Like Babe, he was a runt, but he owed his existence to a young girl named Fern. You see, he was born on a farm, and the farmer's daughter came out to see the pigs the morning they were born. When Fern's father told her that he intended to kill the runt, Fern insisted that she be allowed to care for him instead. She named the pig Wilbur and was as good as her word until he got too big to live with her anymore.
Much to Fern's distress, he was shipped down the road to Zuckerman's farm. She visited him as often as she could and was even able to talk to him and the other barn animals, worrying her mother. But the rest of the time, Wilbur was lonely. Until he met Charlotte, a kindly spider with a knack for spinning fantastic webs. When a grouchy goat informed Wilbur that he would be turned into bacon someday soon, Charlotte agreed to hatch a plan to save him. That plan reached its first stage when she wove the words "SOME PIG" into the web above Wilbur's stall.
This act gained Wilbur a lot of attention, but it didn't stop plans to eat him. Charlotte had to come up with ever more grandiose words to prove to the farmer that this was a pig worth keeping. Zuckerman was eventually convinced, and he was inspired to take Wilbur to the county fair. But on the cusp of his moment of greatest triumph, Wilbur discovered that the spider who had taken him this far would not be returning home with him.
I was first introduced to this wonderful book in first grade, when my teacher began reading it to us. I remembered that I had a copy of it at home, and I decided to create a little competition between myself and Mrs. Sedelmeyer. I read each chapter the night before she read it in school, and I admit I was rather pleased to be able to say that I had finished it before her, even if it was only twelve hours earlier. This lovely book was my gateway into the wonderful world of chapter books, in which I am still thoroughly immersed.
Whether you are just getting started with reading or have been reading for years, this book is a must-read. A bittersweet tale of life and death, "Charlotte's Web" is sure to warm the heart of any animal lover.
