Pros: Provides warmth, comfort, and a good night's sleep
Cons: Offensive smell for a few days
Because my ten year old, three inch mattress topper had seen its better days, I began searching for something new. I didn’t quite know what I wanted, but I did know this type of quality mattress topper was no where to be found. Every store I went to carried only memory foam toppers and they were very expensive.
Against my better judgment, I purchased one from a well known department store and immediately pulled it out of the box when I returned home. I had a difficult time uncurling the memory foam from its neat folds. Upon prying the folds apart, all the memory foam was stuck together and it was a distorted mess! I went right back to the department store and returned it.
I walked to Macy’s at the opposite end of the mall to see what type of mattress toppers they had to offer. They carried a Charter Club, Visco Mattress Topper of which they had a small piece on display. It was a tan color, two inches in height, and had creative designs of circles and squares carved into the foam. My first thought was, “how cool is this!” It must have been my lucky day, for the original price of the queen size was $200.00, but was on sale for 50% reducing the price to $100.00. When I made the purchase at the check out desk, the sales lady gave me a coupon for an additional 15% making this a deal I couldn’t refuse!
Upon returning home, I opened the box and inside was a black plastic bag with the memory foam mattress topper inside. Upon removing the plastic bag, the mattress topper was a light ivory, unlike the tan sample I saw on display in the store.
I unrolled the mattress topper (it wasn’t stuck together as the previous one) and the most offensive smell was emitted from the foam and instantly saturated the room. The smell was so bad that I became nauseous.
I immediately moved it to the dining room and draped it across the dining room table and chairs to air out. Upon reading the instructions, I learned this was a normal occurrence. Because the mattress topper is a polyurethane foam and made from petroleum based components, there was to be a distinct smell associated with the new foam. Ya think?! The instructions suggested to air out the mattress topper for at least twenty four hours for the scent to dissipate.
After three days of flipping the Charter Club Visco Mattress Topper from one side to another, the smell still lingered. I began to think this mattress topper, as the last, was not a keeper.
I allowed this piece of foam a full seven day trial to see if the smell would dissipate as the instructions had promised. By the fifth day, I could actually enter the dining room without becoming nauseous!
The color of the foam began to change from a light ivory to a tan color, just as the sample at Macy’s. I learned from the instructions that it is natural for polyurethane foam to change color when exposed to light and air, but it was not supposed to affect the quality of the product.
So, after seven days, I lugged the awkward piece of foam up the stairs to the master bedroom. I placed it on top of my queen size mattress – voila! – it was a perfect fit from top to bottom, side to side.
The first night sleeping on the Charter Club Visco Mattress Topper was incredible! I felt cozy, warm, and slept through the night. I awoke the next morning with n o aches or pains. It is not the type of mattress topper one would sink into, but it adjusts to the contours of the body for continuous support.
I am glad I gave the Charter Club Visco Mattress Topper a chance to become part of my household. I recommend this product to anyone who has back pain, arthritis, or fibromyalgia. It’s definitely a keeper!
