| popsrocks's Full Review: Chesterfield Mayfair (The) |
My wife and I along with my business partner and his wife were in London on business a few years ago. After much planning we decided on the Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel. It was the right choice.
THE HOTEL
The first thing I liked was that the hotel is not on a main street. You didn't have a lot of noisy traffic in front. We traveled up what seemed to be a side street, turned the corner, and there we were. The front of the hotel has a castle like feel to it with it's large block structure and lamps on each side of the entrance. A doorman is always there, quick to the taxi. Also, though the hotel was a bit off the main road, a call from the doorman had a cab at the entrance within a minute if not seconds.
The entrance and main lobby area was gorgeous. It's not huge, but it is very elegant in it's traditional "English look". The floors were inlaid stone and the colours of the room were bright. Fine furniture and fresh floral arrangements made the room very inviting.
The check in desk was small but quite efficient. We were promptly checked in and taken to our rooms. The elevators were a little slow but not a problem.
OUR ROOM
We liked our room . It was a descent size and also decorated brightly with fine furniture. There was a desk in our air conditioned room. The bed was a king as we had ordered. King beds are very limited there so be sure to book it early. Doubles are what most rooms have. There are suites available. I only saw pictures of them. They look grand!
Our room had all we needed. There was plenty of storage space and we needed it because we were traveling heavy with business equipment. The room had a TV with optional movies. There was a safe too. An iron and board were in the room too. Remember people from the US, the electric in England is different than ours and you can't use your own appliances unless you have adapters. At the Chesterfield we didn't have to worry about it. There was even a dryer in the bathroom. It had plenty of towels, was roomy and good hot water. It too was decorated beautifully.
We had a view of the city. There happened to be a lot of construction going on at the time. We were on the noisy side, my partner was on the quieter side. We didn't bother moving because we knew we would be out of the hotel most daytime hours. It wasn't a problem. There is twenty four hour room service at this hotel.
THE CONCIERGE
I can't say enough about the personal attention these guys gave. They had great advice and were able to help us in anyway we needed. We didn't have any theatre tickets when we arrived in London. The concierge made our booking very easy. We just gave him our preference and they did the rest. The tickets were delivered to the hotel. They even told us when to come down for the cab ride to the theatre.
RESTAURANTS
Every morning as part of our package we had breakfast. It was excellent. They had it in their restaurant which is just down the hall from the lobby. The room is a large yet very intimate. It has a very romantic feel to it, especially at night. The breakfast were served buffet style. I love English sausages so I was in heaven. The food was excellent. We had dinner there one evening also and it was a "fine dining" experience. We personally like to get out and "do the city" but I do recommend you trying them one evening.
Attached to the main dining room is a glassed in conservatory here you can enjoy an afternoon tea. The room being all glass has a very bright and sunny feel during the day. We went there late at night. We spent hours one night just sampling different drinks the waiter brought our way.
This is right next to the bar that is right off the lobby. We did close the bar one evening just having a quiet chat with the bartender. No, we aren't heavy drinkers but we do like to linger over a glass or two of spirits while enjoying good conversation. This hotels bar and dining rooms were perfect for this. Very casual and elegant at the same time.
My wife was particularly impressed with the decor of the hotel. In fact, our redecorated dining room echoes the feel of one of the restrooms of the hotel, minus the toilets of course.
LOCATION
This is another reason for staying here, or maybe not. We were just a block away from Bond Street and it's upscale stores. Hey, what I paid a night for the hotel is barely a deposit on some of the merchandise that is in the store windows. There was also an open market nearby where we spent time shopping.
The hotel is just blocks away from Green Park and Hyde Park. Get out your maps. This is a great location. We walked to Buckingham Palace. A short cab ride also gets you to the Theatre District, and many other tourist sites of London. We had an affair at the Banqueting House of White Hall Palace. This just across the street from Horse Guards Parade and up the street from Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. It took us about ten minutes to get there by cab everyday. The hotel is also not terribly far from the tubes as the English call their subways. These are very clean, bright, and an easy way to get around avoiding London's heavy street traffic.
Up the street from the hotel just a two minute walk was a wonderful pub. Unfortunately I don't remember it's name. Just walk up the street to the left as you leave the hotel. Go to the end of the block and it's right there on your right. we had some great laughs and a good time there.
The concierge also set up my wife and I with a car rental. My partner opted to stay in London a few extra days while my wife and I decided to explore the English country side in the Cotswolds and go to Bath for a few days. That's a side trip I highly recommend if you have time. It's not a one day trip to see it properly.
My partner was back at the hotel again more recently. He said it was great as usual.
