For most cat lovers, and their feline friends, the Chia Cat Grass Planter would make a nice gift. But only if found on a half-price sale, as it's way too expensive, at its normal price.
What is it?
This is a kit that consists of an adorable kitty-themed planter, growing soil, and a packet of cat grass seeds.
Let's start with the planter. The one pictured in this listing shows Sylvester chasing Tweety around the planter. The one I chose is far cuter, I think. It's a gray kitty, with black paws, and a red bow, sleeping peacefully on top of the planter. The cute kitty is what attracted me to this product. I knew that the cat grass would die in a couple weeks, but I'd always have this adorable planter to reuse.
The planter, itself, is bright yellow, and quite small. Its outside dimensions are only 5" long, 3.5" wide, and 2.5" inches tall. Its inside dimensions, obviously even smaller.
The growing soil they give you is soft and dry, and they give you plenty of it - more than enough to fill the planter.
The packet of seeds is labeled as "pesticide free oat & wheatgrass mix". According to the packet, Cat Grass contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes that can aid a cat's digestion and help eliminate furballs.
Growing the grass was amazingly simple. Fill the planter with most of the soil, add the grass seeds, and the rest of the soil. Add a little water, and cover with a plastic bag for a few days. In about a week we had 5" long grass. The mature product looks exactly like the picture on the box. The grass is green and thick, just like the in the picture.
I have no trouble believing that cat grass can be healthy for cats, IF the cat eats it. And here's where, at least in my household, this product fails. My kitty won't touch it. Oh, he came bounding over when it was first presented to him. And he sniffed around it for a minute or two. But then he walked away. His interest never piqued, in fact he never cared about the grass one single bit. Of course, this is the same dopey cat that doesn't eat tuna, won't drink milk, and will sooner pick up a potato chip that falls to the floor, than a piece of chicken.
Yup, I'm sure it's just my silly cat, but this grass was definitely not a hit.
So, I give this product high marks for its cuteness factor, its easy-to-grow grass, and the fact that the end product matches the picture perfectly. But it gets low marks for its ridiculously expensive retail price of $17. Had it not been on a half-price sale, there's no way I would have bought it. And, it gets low marks for the simple fact that my kitty won't touch it, although I'm quite certain that's not the product's fault. So, in a word, "average".
