The Drake - A Grand Lady
Written: May 08 '04
Pros:Convenience, gracious staff. History.
Cons:Rooms can vary in size and view. Overpriced restaurant. Detail cleanliness.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this hotel mainly for the location and History.
First off, this is a older hotel that has been renovated as well as anyone could hope. Keeping the best of the older features while preventing it from looking dated.
On arrival a nice and polite staff got us to our room quickly. Our room had a street view and was large enough for our stay. First bad note: the TV wouldn't work and it took 2 hours (until 10:30pm) to get it working. The first maintenance person was foul mouthed about it but the one who repaired it was a little nicer but still no apology for the inconvenience. And I was waiting for one. The room while nice was very dusty in spots. For example; every lamp was caked in dust, I mean they hadn't been dusted in months dusty. Yes that's picky but you expect better at this level.
Skip breakfast at the main restaurant, it is a great looking place but for $14.95 I expected warmer food and more variety for the buffet. We also had to repeatedly grab our waiter to get his attention, and they weren't that busy.
Let me say this though. This hotel has a great history. It is convenient to the Miracle Mile Shopping (at the northern most end). The public areas are truly a class act and overall the staff was great. Would I stay here again - well no. I would try out other hotels I saw on my visit. But if you love the Grand Hotels of bygone days you don't want to miss this place.
