Children's Motrin ~ It's better than tylenol!

Written: Jul 26 '00 (Updated Feb 18 '02)
Pros:Works fast, doctor administered it in the hospital. Works better than Tylenol
Cons:NONE
The Bottom Line: See review.

Whoever said "what mistakes you make with your first child, you will not make with your second" was right. I used to always keep tylenol liquid handy in the house whenever my oldest son would need it. Even after my second son was born, I still kept tylenol in the house. That is, up until last August when my youngest son started to suffer from febrile seizures and the doctor gave him Motrin in the hospital.

Here's the story, one day last August, my little guy, who was 16 months old at the time, had a bad cold. Took him to the doctor, etc.etc. Doctor says to give him tylenol every 4 hours for his fever. Fine, no problem. Well his fever is still not going down. About 45 minutes after giving him tylenol his fever hit 102.8, which I know is not that high, but that was my son's body limit. Then he started to seize on me. We took him to the hospital since it's quicker for us to drive him than wait for an ambulance. (We used to be volunteer EMT's here, so we know their response time.) As soon as we get him their, he is completly out of it. The on call doctor gives him Motrin. 30 minutes later my son is coming through and the fever is starting to reduce a little bit at a time. 1 hour later my son is jumping around trying to pull the IV's out from his arm.

So now let's fast forward. Doctor tells me to keep giving him Motrin every 4 hours for the next 16 hours. But in between those 4 hours, give him tylenol. So at 12 I would give Motrin, 2 I would give tylenol and at 4 Motrin again.

Fast forward even more. Since then, I was told to always keep Motrin and Tylenol in the house in case my son starts to seize again. As soon as he feels the slightest bit warm, I give him Motrin then take his temperature. I have found that the Motrin starts to work right away, and it's good for aches & pains too along with fevers.

I use the Motrin now on both of kids. The one time since last August that we ran out of it, and my son had a fever, I gave him tylenol and then went to get Motrin from the store. Well, he seized again. That was the only time since discovering he suffers from febrile seizures that he seized. And all because there was no Motrin in the house. So just by that experience alone, I would say Motrin works!

Like I said, I use it on both of kids now. Whether it be a fever, a toothache, or getting stitches, Motrin does the job. Like the bottle says, it is a fever reducer and a pain reliever. They are telling you the truth about that. It works fast to reduce the fever and the pain, and it lasts longer than tylenol.

Of course always check your doctor before starting something new. He may tell you to give the Motrin every 5 or 6 hours instead. Remember, I give it every 4 hours on the advice of my pediatrician. So please just be sure to check. Motrin does contain Ibuprofen, so there is always a possible allergy to it.
