This morning I awoke to the words every parent dreads hearing, “Mommy, I don’t feel good”. My daughter was complaining of a headache and when I felt her forehead I could tell she was running a fever. I headed to the medicine cabinet and first got a thermometer to see just how high the fever was and then the Children’s Motrin®. My children rarely get sick and a couple weeks ago, I was caught unprepared when my son came home from school with a cold. Luckily while I was buying over-the-counter medicine to relieve his cold symptoms, I also picked up some other medicines I thought would be a good idea to have in my cabinet as a “just in case”, Children’s Motrin® was one of them.
There were several factors that figured into my decision to buy Children’s Motrin®. One being when my son fell off a scooter and sprained his arm this summer (yes, you know all those statistics they keep stating on the news about emergency room visits caused by scooter accidents, we were one of them), the doctor recommended Children’s Motrin for the pain®. I at that time asked him about it because in the past we had only been given Children’s Tylenol®. He told me that they find Children’s Motrin works faster. Another factor, I had a coupon, double that and it would make Children’s Motrin® cheaper than even the generic brand. Add to that the fact this product lasts 6 to 8 hours instead of 4 to 6 like the Children’s Tylenol®, which to me means I will use less of this product, in turn saving more money. Children’s Motrin® was my choice.
CHILDREN’S MOTRIN® IBUPROFEN ORAL SUSPENSION
Children’s Motrin® Ibuprofen Oral Suspension is a product made especially for children ages 2 to 11 years of age to reduce fever and relieve pain. Each 5 ml (teaspoon) contains 100 mg of Ibuprofen. It also contains the following inactive ingredients: Acesulfame Potassium, Citric Acid, Cornstarch, D&C Red #33, FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Red #40, natural and artificial flavors, Glycerin, Polysorbate 80, Purified Water, Sodium Benzoate, Xanthan Gum.
READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY
The label for Children’s Motrin contains some very important directions for use and warnings. A few of these instructions I was unfamiliar with being they are not usually found on Children’s Tylenol® which was the product I used most in the past.
Directions I found to be different are you must shake Children’s Motrin® Ibuprofen Oral Suspension well before using and if your child experiences stomach upset while taking this product, then you need to give any additional doses with food or milk.
The rest of the directions are pretty standard on all children’s medications. They are:
* Take only as directed, do not take more than the recommended dosage.
* Use dosing chart that is provided, dose by weight whenever possible, if you do not know weight, then dose by age.
* Use only the measuring cup provided with product, it is specially made for use with this product.
Recommended Dosage
The recommended dosage for Children’s Motrin® is as follows:
Under 24 pounds or 2 years old - you need to consult the doctor
24 to 35 pounds or 2 to 3 years old – 1 teaspoon
36 to 47 pounds or 4 to 5 years old – 1-1/2 teaspoons
48 to 59 pounds or 6 to 8 years old – 2 teaspoons
60 to 71 pounds or 9 to 10 years old – 2-1/2 teaspoons
72 to 95 pounds or 11 years old – 3 teaspoons
Children’s Motrin® can be given every 6 to 8 hours as needed for pain or fever, not to exceed 4 doses a day.
Allergy Alert
Children’s Motrin® contains ibuprofen which may cause severe allergic reactions. These reactions may include hives, asthma (wheezing), facial swelling, and shock. You are not to use this product if your child has ever had an allergic reaction to any other pain reliever or fever reducer medication.
If your child should have an allergic reaction while taking this product stop use and seek medical help immediately.
Do Not Take This Product
*The product label warns you not to use this product if you are currently taking another product that contains ibuprofen or if you are taking any other pain reliever/fever reducer unless a doctor has instructed you to do so.
*Do not give your child Children’s Motrin® for more than 3 days unless directed by your doctor.
*Do not use this product to relieve stomach pain in your child without consulting your doctor first.
*Children’s Motrin® is not to be given to children that are dehydrated whether from lack of fluid intake, diarrhea, or vomiting.
*DO NOT USE IF BOTTLE WRAP IMPRINTED SAFTEY SEAL® IS BROKEN OR MISSING.
Call Your Doctor
*Before using Children’s Motrin, you should consult your doctor if your child is under a doctor’s care for any serious condition or is taking any other drug.
*If your child has ever had any problems or serious side effects from taking any fever reducer/pain relievers, then it is advised that you call your doctor before giving this medication to your child.
*It is recommended that you call your doctor if after 24 hours you child does not get any relief or if fever or pain worsens.
*You should also call your doctor if your child experiences stomach upset with this product and it lasts or gets worse.
*If you child has a severe sore throat that lasts more than 2 days or is accompanied by fever, headache, rash, nausea or vomiting, seek medical advise before continuing this product.

GOT A QUESTION?
If you have any questions, you can ask your Doctor, Pharmacist, or any Health Care Professional or call the toll free number provided by the makers of Children’s Motrin® Ibuprofen Suspension, 1-800-962-5357. You can also find more information on Children’s Motrin® at their website (http://www.motrin.com/products/children/ch_main.html).
DIFFERENT FORMS
I personally chose the suspension liquid form of Children’s Motrin®, however, it also comes in chewable tablets and swallowable caplets. The suspension liquid comes in three flavors, berry, grape and bubblegum. I picked up the grape flavor because my children seem to prefer grape flavors when given the choice. The chewable tablets are an aspartame-sweetened, orange flavor.
MY RECOMMENDATION
I found my daughter’s fever to be completely gone 30 minutes after giving her a dose of Children’s Motrin® which really pleased me and her. As I stated earlier, the doctor prescribed this to control the pain my son was experiencing from spraining his arm. At that time, we noticed it seemed to work fast and was effective in relieving his pain. I would recommend Children’s Motrin® to all parents that are looking for a fast and effective fever reducer/pain reliever.
