Children's Cherry Flavored Liquid Tylenol
Written: Aug 8, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Works fast, easy to dispense, relieves fever and pain
Cons:Contains sugar
The Bottom Line: A must have since we have a little one around again. Great to have on hand.
Tylenol is a brand that our family has trusted for many years. My granddaughter was given infant Tylenol when she was teething, and now that she is almost two years old we have upgraded to the Tylenol for children ages 2-11.
Children's Tylenol Oral Suspension was available in cherry, grape and bubble gum flavors, but berry flavors go over the best with our little one. This definitely smells like cherries, and it doesn't taste too bad either.
Tylenol claims this can be used for temporary relief of the common cold, flu, headache, sore throat, and toothache. Our pediatrician has also recommended it to help reduce fevers. Evie is just getting over a cold and was running a slight fever for a couple days. We gave her a dose at bedtime to help her rest more comfortably.
The medication comes with a dosing cup so it's easy to give the correct amount to children. I prefer giving medicine through a tiny clear cup instead of through a measuring spoon, it's less messy. One dose contains 160 mg of acetaminophen per teaspoon (or 5 mL).
This is our doctors medication of choice for young children, but when fevers are high she does recommend alternating doses of children's Tylenol with children's Advil. The box does say that "Use of Tylenol with other pain relievers (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) is not recommended". I think that means not to give two different medications at the same time, but do check with your doctor or pharmacist to see what is best for your child. Both feel both Tylenol and Advil work equally well, but I am more comfortable giving EvieChildren's Tylenol. Aspirin is out since it isn't safe to give to children with flulike symptoms due to the connection with Reye's Syndrome.
As with all medications there are warnings to heed. This particular Tylenol should not be given to children under the age of 2 unless directed by a doctor. Dosages can be repeated every 4 hours but you should not exceed 5 doses in a 24 hour period.
Evie has been taking different types of medication since she was tiny (she was born with acid reflux), and she always takes her medicine easily. I think manufacturers make it taste pretty good, almost like candy, and it is flavored with high fructose corn syrup. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.
This medicine does seem to help Evie feel better when she has a cold or sore throat, and I plan on using it when she starts to cut her molars.
Evie spends at least one weekend a month with us and I feel it is important to always have this medication on hand. It is a mainstay, along with Maty's cough syrup, an antihistamine and saline nose drops.
