Nobody likes being stuck in the house on a beautiful sunny day with a sick baby. Add to that one grouchy and very sick baby that will not open his mouth for liquid medicine and your sunny day soon turns into a rather gloomy day! Enter into my life Children's Tylenol Meltaways.
The medicine
Children's Tylenol Meltaways is a newer version of children's Tylenol fever reducer/pain reliever. Each tablet contains 80mg of acetaminophen and is intended to relieve minor aches and pains due to the common cold, flu, headache, sore throat, immunizations, toothache, and to temporarily reduce fever. Dosage is by age/weight of your child from 2 - 6 tablets every 4 hours. Directions are to dissolve in mouth or chew before swallowing.
The test
As I said, my 16 month old is not very good about taking liquid medicine. Add to that a nasty stomach virus complete with vomiting, diarrhea, and a fever, and we have an unhappy little boy. On one of our recent outings to Wal-Mart, I had purchased a bottle of Children's Tylenol Meltaways for children ages 2-6 for his older sister, and although the label says consult a doctor before giving to children under age 2, I decided to try them and see how they'd work. (He does weigh 25 pounds which is above the lowest weight on the dosage chart, and I have asked the pediatrician before on other products, so I felt certain we were safe!) I took 2 tablets out of the bottle and handed one to my son. He took one look at it, said "Tanks" and popped it in his mouth. Naturally he started chewing, but the tablet did seem to dissolve quicker than the regular chewables upon contact with his tongue and saliva. He took the second one from me, and ate it too with no problems. About 1/2 hour later, he was happier, and his fever was down as well. My 4 year old has also taken Children's Tylenol Meltaways for a headache recently when told they were supposed to melt or dissolve in her mouth, she decided to try it - it took less than a minute for 3 tablets to disappear!
Sunny Days again?
Overall, I think the Children's Tylenol Meltaways are great! As with other Tylenol products, they are safe and effective for relieving the symptoms they claim to. It's also nice to have an alternative to liquid medication for stubborn children.
