Pros:Superior neck support. Adjustable to soft, medium and firm support levels.
The Bottom Line: The Chiroflow Water Pillow was exceptional in helping my neck stiffness and pain.
My daughter worked for a chiropractor for two years before she moved out of state, and one of the best products her boss sold was a Chiroflow Water Pillow, made by Mediflow. My daughter owned one of these pillows, but I was skeptical that they could really improve my health. However, when she went on vacation for a week, I slept with her pillow and loved it so much I purchased one for myself.

On the surface the Chiroflow looks like any ordinary pillow, however it is anything but! Like most traditional pillows, it has a top layer of polyester filling that is hypoallergenic, but that's where all the similarities end. Under this layer of filling is a water bladder that is encased in a thermal insulator to prevent it from drawing heat away from your head and body. The water bladder is connected to the base of the pillow, keeping them together. The size I own is 20" by 28".
Caring For the Chiroflow Pillow
This pillow can be washed, although you need to take some special steps in order to do so. Obviously, you need to remove the water from the pillow, but you also need to be sure that as much air as possible is removed from the bladder. Replace the cap on the bladder, and hand wash the pillow in cold water. It must be air dried, and specific instructions say NOT to wash this in a washing machine.
I was experiencing a lot of neck pain and stiffness. Every time I turned my head I was hearing a clicking sound, like you hear when you crack your back or other joints. After several visits to this Chiropractor, they suggested I try the Chiroflow pillow. Since my daughter worked for them, they sold me the $50 Chiroflow Water Pillow for only $25.00.
My husband and I sleep on a king sized bed, so our sheets and pillow cases are, of course, kind sized as well. This pillow is a little small, I have to fold a good 6-8 inches of pillow case under the pillow because it doesn't fill it up. I asked if this water pillow is sold in different sizes, but the Dr.'s office said it is only available to them in the 20" x 28" size, which is considered by Mediflow to be a jumbo size, which is something between a standard and a queen size.
The pillow comes with a small funnel shaped spout that screws into the pillow to allow for easy filling. You don't need any special water or additives, simply use your tap water. The pillow comes with directions on how to add enough water to give three levels of support: soft, medium and firm. You can use your pillow for an entire year before changing the water. If you are concerned about any bacteria building up in the water, you can add a drop of chlorine to the water and it won't harm the bladder.
The unfilled pillow weighs 3.5 pounds, but when I have it at the level right for me, this baby is pretty heavy, weighing about 10 pounds.
I sleep more comfortable when I am using the Chiroflow pillow, and my neck pain disappeared within 6 months. I no longer have the stiffness and popping sounds! It provides me with the proper neck support, and I can taylor my needs simply by adding or removing water from the bladder.
In the summer months this pillow is nice, because the bottom portion does remain cool. If it's a hot evening, or if I have a hot flash, I can cool off my arms by placing them under the pillow. I thought this might work against me in the winter time, but it's coolness doesn't bother me, even when I sleep with one hand under my pillow.
This pillow is incredibly comfortable to sleep on. It responds to my movements during sleep because the weight of my head displaces the water, and it continues to support me no matter what position my head is in. I love how I can personalize my level of comfort by simply adjusting how much water the bladder contains.
The pillow comes with a two year warranty, and is manufactured in the United States, and I'm good with that. I always prefer to buy products made in the US when I can.
The only downfall is that these pillows can only be purchased through a Chiropractor's office, and they are hard to travel with. They are heavy when you pick them up, and you can hear the water sloshing around. I don't have much of a problem with water noises while I'm sleeping on this pillow.
After using this pillow for 3 years, I can't imagine sleeping without it. When we go camping I have to take it along, because I don't sleep as comfortable when I go back to a standard pillow.
Clinical sleep and neck pain studies have shown that the vast majority of people who used this pillow experienced less neck pain and improved quality of sleep. My daughter related that during the two years she worked for a chiropractor, they received nothing but positive feedback about the Chiroflow Water Pillow.
I highly recommend this pillow to anyone with neck pain or those who have a hard time finding a pillow that's comfortable.
