Growing up, one of the few items we ever bought from the bulk bins was sunflower seeds. Mom would buy pounds of these salty, roasted little gems. As many as would fit would go into an old barrel-shaped applesauce jar. Dad would sit in front of his football games cracking sunflower seed shells with his teeth and eating the kernels inside. I personally thought they were too much work, and needed chocolate. Someone else must have thought as I did.
Someone came up with the brilliant idea of taking sunflower seeds out of their shells and covering them in milk chocolate and then covering the whole thing in a glossy candy coating. The coating is a rainbow of pastels and more dense colors - pink, green, yellow, blue, dark red, burgundy, etc. Think of it as the daintier gourmet cousin of a peanut M&M. As good as a peanut M&M is, however, this tastes better.
Even enrobed in chocolate, these seeds maintain a basic sunflower shape. They're great for nibbling straight out of the candy bowl. I find they don't last long there, however, as the beautiful colors attract too much attention too quickly. I've also mixed them in with my version of Chex party mix to add a bit of sweet to the salty. I've also used them to add crunch to a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Because they're smaller than M&Ms, you can sprinkle them on for crunch without making the sandwich lumpy.
I've found versions of chocolate covered sunflower seeds at a variety of places. The real difference I've noticed is freshness. If they're very fresh, they're much better. Do check dates or purchase from someplace that is likely to have reasonable turnover. I have purchased from NutsOnline and been very satisfied with the product. It has always been at its freshest from them.
A single serving is listed on the package as about an ounce. I say about since a 1 pound package claims to have 16.2 servings. Each serving has 2 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein and 4% of your daily value of calcium and iron.
I love the taste of these. I will highly recommend them. I must warn, however, they are addictive. I hope no one ever finds me in front of the tv eating these from an old barrel-shaped applesauce jar.
