My first experience with Chumley's was back when I was about 10 years old. My mother held my hand as we circled a typical Greenwich Village city block numerous times, getting colder and crankier while we searched in vain for the restaurant.
Chumley's was hosting a poetry reading that afternoon by John Gunther (who wrote "Death Be Not Proud" about his son's passing away from a brain tumor as well as all the Inside Travel books) and we were running late. We stopped an elderly gentleman for directions, and he politely led us to the elusive restaurant (we later discovered that the elderly gentleman was Gunther himself). Good thing we asked -- Chumley's is tucked away in the very center of the block, and unless you know what you are looking for, you will miss it.
Chumley's non-presumptuous location typifies its personality -- everything is laid back and relaxed about the place. It's your typical bar/cafe, but it comes with a roaring fireplace and a few cats that lounge around and let you pet them, if you're nice. You can get a good hot meal there and some awesome beers on tap, and if you go on the right day, you might even catch a decent poetry reading.
I returned to Chumley's about 15 years later with a bunch of friends on New Year's Eve. Not much had changed -- and that is good. The patrons were still down to earth, and the food still warmed your stomach. Despite its popularity, it is still very much a local haunt, and I hope it stays that way.
