Citizen Cake is the place to indulge on desserts and coffee/tea. What more can one ask for?
Pros:
1) Food - Yum. Meticulously prepared morsels. We had the high tea menu, which included a five courses of petit h'ordeurves with choice of teas. The seared ahi tuna was a tad overseared but fresh and tender nevertheless.
2) Atmosphere - The carefully made cakes and food are symbolic of the airy/lofty and industrial modern cafe. All furnishings seem to be custom made for this place. The chairs are must-sees, if not must-sits. The chair is made from 1in x 1in acrylic strips that makes up the seat and back, all held together by thin steel tubular frame. Ok, I know this is suppose to be a food review, but hey, I'm an architect. As such, I went in there for the atmosphere first, then the sweets.
3) Service - Despite con #2 and 3 below, the staff is courteous and professional.
4) Catchy name - Citizen Cake - get it? Near City Hall...
Cons:
1) Price - Wish good food did not cost so much. Just think of it as paying for quality, not quantity or size. The high tea menu ranges from $15 to $24, depending on the pre-selected choices. The menu is designed for the pre-theatre crowd, and the small portions assure that patrons don't metabolize to sleep in the theatre.
2) Understaffed - Three frantic waitpersons serve twice the amount of customers they can handle. One serves the pastry counter, the other serves the bar and attends to the cashier, and the last runs and waits on tables. Be patient, the empty teapot might sit unattended for awhile, but the staff will eventually refill it.
3) Wait - All because of #2 above.
4) Hours - The place seems catered to pre-theatre and tourist crowd and the hours reflect that. Too bad it doesn't open after the theatre since it's a nice place to just hang out for a while.
5) Misc - Big tall windows enclose this space, and the entire seating area faces the afternoon sun. Although the corner windows are shaded, the seats toward the kitchen are exposed. Bring some shades, or put on some tanning lotion.
Citizen Cake's combination of good coffee or tea and awesome desserts will make any patron return for more.
