Excellent watch - but expensive

Written: Feb 03 '06
Pros:looks nice, keeps accurate time.
Cons:price, recharging problems
The Bottom Line: I would tell people to ask themselves what they are using it for. Great in the light but not so good in the dark or at night.

This watch was a gift from my wife after I became a military pilot. It has great aviation features on it - such as the calculator and the world time UTC feature comes in handy. I suppose, however, that these features are not really required by those who are not aviators.

I have the stainless steel model which is heavy at times. It took me a while to get used to wearing it as I noticed how heavy it was on my wrist. However, once you get used to the weight one does not notice it. It looks nice in casual or formal wear. I only wear it on special occasions but could easily wear it everyday.

I found the stainless steel wrist band hard to fit. I brought it to the jeweler where it was purchased and it just never got a perfect fit. Either too tight or too loose. The only other option was to try to fit another wrist band which would have ruined the entire look of the watch. The jeweler did what he could be it is not a perfect fit - considering the price that was paid, I was expecting a better fitting band rather then having to settle for a "close" fit.

The watch comes with a manual that is best described as a small novel. It is, however, easy to follow and easy to read. The features are easy to learn and once you understand how it works, it really is a work of art that keeps excellent time.

I would liked to have seen it come with a light such as an indiglo or something. The luminescent hands do well in the dark but the other features are useless without light. I also found that because it goes into power saving mode when in the dark it takes a few seconds for the hands to catch up to the actual time when exposed to light.

I have worn this watch in a cockpit at night and it really is not practical. To use all the features I would have to turn on overhead lights which ruin your night vision. The watch is fine for any other aviation function.

I have had recharging problems with it. It has never been kept totally in the dark for extended periods of time and it has lost its charge. I wore it one day and the next day it had stopped and the digital displays were flashing. I had it exposed to outdoor light for hours on end, I exposed it to indoor lamps for hours and days and nothing would recharge it. It now has to be sent back to the Citizen head office for repair. I was expecting more out of it.

Because it was a gift I am not totally sure on the exact price but estimate it between $400 -$500Cdn.

This is a nice watch that looks good and keeps great time. Despite the recharging problems that I have encountered, I would not hesitate to recommend this watch to someone who wants a nice looking watch, that keeps time, and never needs a battery. For an aviator, it is good but not for use in a dark cockpit.
