Citrix Metaframe 1.8 is a very cost effective product to purchase for your network in the workplace. Over time it can really save your company a lot of money.

What Citrix can allow you to do is connect to any published application that is on your Citrix Server. Lets say that none of your computers at work are able to handle the installation of Microsoft Office 2000. Well, all you need to do is install Office 2k on the Citrix server, publish the application and it is now available to everyone on the network. Everyone who the administrator feels should use I should say.

Another nice feature of Citrix is that it can communicate with many other operating systems. Apple, Solaris, any unix operating system, it it works with ease.

You will need to purchase a server to run Citrix on, and you can use either Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server or Windows 2000. I have not used Citrix with Windows 2000 Server, so I am not sure how it works under that operating system.

At my work, I have been administrating the Citrix Servers for almost 2 years now. There are about 100 users on the network. Most of the computers are older and could not handle the installation of many pieces of software that are needed in todays business world. Instead of buying 100 new computers, we decided to buy the Citrix Metaframe 1.8, a Citrix Server(Duel Celeron 733 with 1 gigabyte of memory).
The server can be really cheap now especially with the price of memory being way down. For a fraction of the price
of buying 100 new computers, we now had a solution for the problem that cost us as I said before, a small fraction of the price.

Since we installed the Citrix Server, we have moved to a new timekeeping system for employees that runs off of the Citrix Server. There was no need to buy an additional computer just for this system to run on, and now employees can log on, punch in, and start work. Very, Very easy.

With the 1.8 version you can get a product called NFUSE.
This is an application that will allow you to connect to your work files over the internet. Providing that you have the correct Internet Access at your work.

It is very simple, enter the address that has been given to you, and you will be connected to a page that asks for your login and password. Once that is successful, you are looking at the page just as if you were at work. This is a very nice feature for those of us who seem to never get all of our work done and are taking thigs home with us.

You can use Citrix for any program that you can think of. It can run games, however this was not designed for gaming, so it is a little slow, yet playable. This product is worth the money, especially if you are faced with having to upgrade your entire network.
