Pros:100% natural plant fiber, won't cause gas, tastes better than Metamucil.
Cons:Doesn't taste like an Orange Julius.
The Bottom Line: When I get irregular, Citrucel always helps get me back on track, the natural way.
There are times when my body gets a bit ... ummm ... irregular. Especially when we go on vacation and my routine and diet changes, or if I don't drink enough liquids. My Dr. recommended that I take Metamucil. He said it was the most natural laxative if you will. It is much safer than laxative pills, because it's fiber, not a stimulant, and helps my body to regulate itself natrually. I hated Metamucil!!

What It Is
Citrucel's main ingredient is methylcellulose, which is nothing more than a plant based soluble fiber. Soluble means it will dissolve in water. Although the fiber is from plant sources, it will not ferment and therefore won't cause gas and stomach upset. (The makers of Citrucel claim that Metamucil's fiber is non-soluble, will ferment, and may cause gas).
It adds bulk to the diet and absorbs water in the stools, making stools softer, and easier to pass. It can be taken several times a day for a week, but usually works in 1 to 3 days.
Having tried Metamucil as my Dr. recommended, I could not gag it down. I was caring for a little girl who had Down's Syndrome, and these children have poor muscle tone, and some have problems having bowel movements. Her parents would send her to my house with Citrucel. She seemed to take it pretty well, and it smelled like Tang, so I decided to give the bulk laxatives one more try and buy Citrucel for myself.
I admit that Citrucel mixed in water isn't very palatable. Unfortunately, although it smelled like Tang, it does not taste like Tang. I found, however, that if I mix it with cold orange juice (the directions say to mix it with at least 8 ounces) and drink it quickly, it isn't half bad. It just makes my orange juice taste sweeter (because Citrucel does contain sugar). If I wait to long after mixing it up, it will start to thicken and then it is impossible for me to get down. The key is to drink it quickly.
There is no comparison between Metamucil and Citrucel - at least the Citrucel Orange Flavor - that is the only flavor of Citrucel I have tried.
Each dose (1 Tablespoon)contains: Methyl Cellulose (2g),
3 mg of sodium, and 60 calories.
Inactive Ingredients: Citric Acid, FD&C Yellow 6 Lake, Orange Flavors (natural and artificial), Potassium Citrate, Riboflavin, Sucrose.
I have been unwise in the past and taken chemical stimulant laxatives from time to time, and not only do they cause stomach cramping, I never know when they will "kick in". And when they do, I better be close to a bathroom! No matter how gentle laxative pills claim to be, most of them are still a stimulant of some kind.
Citrucel is much more natural. It doesn't give me diarrhea like chemical stimulants do. It gently gets me back on track.
There are warnings on the package about choking hazards, and about fiber remedies swelling in your throat if you don't drink enough water. According to the Citrucel website, the warnings are there because the FDA requires them to be. The company further states that Citrucel should not swell in the mouth or throat.
When I occasionally get irregular, I choose to try a more natural form of relief by simply adding more fiber to my diet, and Citrucel adds that fiber. It is recommended that we get up to 35 grams of fiber daily, and I know that many times I am not meeting that requirement. I try to eat whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables, as well as eating high fiber cereals for breakfast. If I drink enough water and exercise regularly, I don't usually have a problem with irregularity. There are times when my routine changes and I can't always do those things. When I need that extra bit of help, I choose Metamucil.
