Pros: great historic/colonial decor and feel. great (& historical)food, coupons at visitor center, no reservations needed.
Cons: The waiter was mumbling in an accent that he was not good at rendering.
The Bottom Line: This to enjoy history while you dine.

| JasonNYCity's Full Review: City Tavern |
I was in a bookstore outlet in lancaster and I came across the cookbook for City Tavern. I had never been to the restaurant but had seen it on TVFN (TV Food Network) and figured I would take a look. The recipes really did look great. A few days later I was in the Visitor's Center in Philadelphia asking about a good place to eat dinner. The information agent handed me a buy one get one free coupon for City Tavern. I already knew I liked their recipes so I was hooked.
I loved the colonial decor from the start, although drinking out of metal goblets that are colder then the water is a strange experience.
The waiters are all in period garb and speaking in slight old English accents. We had to get the waiter than also mumbled, so we couldn't understand him. I eventually stopped asking him to repeat stuff (like lists of breads or desserts) since it wasn't helping. Other than that, the service was excellent.
The pumpkin roll (Benjamin Franklin's recipe) was very good. I had the soup of the day (cabbage w/ Bacon) which was also very good, with the tartness of the cabbage, and the smokeyness of the bacon. The crab stuffed shrimp (3)appetizer was good. My rack of lamb was excellent and done properly, with the right amount of redness inside. The potatoes on the side were nice. I was a bit disappointed in the chocolate angel food cake since it had a gingerbread like flavor, which I was not expecting.
Two entrees, a soup, an appetizer, and two desserts ran about $80, after which one entree ($22)was subtracted due to the coupon.
This is a nice place for kids since They get to see some history in action.

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations I like the City Tavern Cookbook. Also, the chef changed a couple of months ago, so the cookbook author is not the current chef. Best Suited For: Friends
