There are some products that I'm wishy-washy about. They fulfill many of their promises, but in some areas they just let me down. That is where the {drumroll please} All Around Average reviews come in. Products included in these reviews aren't miracles or the greatest I've ever tried. Yet I don't have the urge to run far far away and never look back at them. The first product in this series is Herbal Essences Non-Aerosol Hairspray.

I am a perfectionist, I admit it. My schoolwork assignments, my social life, even my beauty products-- I strive to make them the best they can be. I have hair that gets oily and limp the day after I wash it. I needed a hairspray that didn't weigh down my hair, or cause an oilslick comparable to the Exxon-Valdez incident! Also, I wanted flexible moveable hold. My previous hairspray, Salon Selectives Stay Flexible was a pretty big letdown. I don't think it is included on Epinions, so I'll give you a brief synopsis. It smelled bad, left noticeable flaky white residue, and did not last through the day. I needed a change. Herbal Essences is a company that I can rely on for at LEAST average products. Their Clarifying Shampoo and other shampoos/conditioners are very nice and live up to their promises. Also, there are frequent sales that make the already reasonable price of Herbal Essences products (2-5 dollars) lower. SoOoOo... I traveled to my local Super Stop & Shop and picked up a generous bottle of hairspray for around $4.

I own the hairspray in the typeFlexible Hold. I like a hold that is touchable and "swish"able. However, there are other options such as Extra Hold, Maxiumum Hold, or Spray Gel.
I just looked around the house for my bottle of Herbal Essences Non-Aerosol Hairspray, but it seems to be MIA. ::grumbles:: I'll just have to get the facts from drugstore.com.
Herbal Essences Non-Aerosol Hairspray comes in an 8.5 fl. oz. clear plastic bottle. It is oval shaped. The liquid inside is a light purple, although obviously when you spray it on your hair it is clear. You wouldn't want to have a purple-tinted head...anyways...
On the front of the bottle is the Herbal Essences logo with a picture of some kind of flower. It says:
"~This unique formula, enriched with organic Lily of the Valley, Jojoba and Clover that come to us in pure mountain spring water.
~Gives flexible hold and lasting control without dulling, stiffness or stickiness.
~Is blended with naturally-sourced holding ingredients.
~Refreshes hair with a customized botanical formula, giving it healthy shine and lift.
~Product not tested on animals.
~Bottle uses 25% post-consumer recycled plastic. Please recycle. Limited facilities available.
~Formula meets state clean air standards.

I'm sorry, they're not listed on Drugstore.com. When (if?) I find my bottle, I will update this review for ones with sensitivities.

I use this hairspray many different ways. I like to braid my hair in the nighttime when it is wet. Then the following morning I unravel the braids and *voila* my hair is crimped. Herbal Essences Non-Aerosol Hairspray helps preserve this style. Also, when I have annoying flyaways or frizz, I lightly spritz the hairspray over them, then smooth them with my fingers. A trick I learned online is to spray an old (clean!) toothbrush with hairspray and then brush it along the hairline to tame wisps of hair. I really like this technique, as it is more effective than tucking hair behind your ears or any other obsessive habits.
I find that if you use too much of Herbal Essences Non-Aerosol Hairspray, it will make your hair slightly greasy and weighed down. Perhaps it's just my dull and thin hair. But even so, spritz with moderation! Also, if you apply too much it will make your hair hard and stiff. Yet even when your hair gets stiff, it will still move! I like this aspect of the hairspray... the flexible hold. It doesn't give that hard helmet effect, and your hair can still *swish*. In fact, if you flip your hair upside-down when blowdrying and then apply the hairspray, you can get that that sexy, windblown look we all wish we could possess!
I love the trademark Herbal Essences fragrance and I'm SO GLAD it is present in this product! Usually in hairsprays, you BREATHE and a wave of nasty chemicals enter your nose, resulting in embarrassing choking and coughing. When someone asks you what's wrong, all you can utter is "hairspray....inhale....DYING!" Well fine, maybe it's only happened to ME! xP
A minor problem with this hairspray is that a fine white residue sometimes appears in strands. If you swipe a comb through it, it will start flaking.(Fortunately, this has only happened to me once.) But I find that the dandruff-like-look comes as a result of over-spraying. So again, don't go on a hairspraying spree! If you wanted that much hold you should have bought a hairspray for those specifications.

Herbal Essences Non-Aerosol Hairspray is a very much adequate hairspray. It is average in almost all respects. If you want a perfect hairspray, continue your search. Also if you have extremely fine or oily hair don't take your chances with this product. For normal to thick hair, I recommend it. It's a hairspray that meets many needs. If you are strapped for money and need an adequate hairspray, this is a great option!
