I am continually on the look-out for hair products that can tame my naturally wavy hair. I had heard from a friend that this mousse was able to tame her curly hair so I figured it would help out my wavy hair. Boy, was I wrong!
THE PRODUCT
Clairol Essences Extra Hold Styling Mousse is a blend of Jasmine, Angelica and Willow. With all of those sweet smelling substances, you would expect this product to smell yummy, right? Wrong! It had more of a medicinal smell than any other mousse that I have used. I think I smelled only a touch of Jasmine. That was definitely not enough to satisfy me.
This stuff comes in a regular mousse can with a press lever for dispensing the product covered with the usual plastic cap. I bought this mousse in an 8-oz. can for $2.99. The can is white with the Clairol Herbal Essences writing and logo on the front. It also tells you the three main smelling ingredients (Jasmine, Angelica, and Willow) right on the front of the can.
Clairol’s Claims:

HOW TO USE
I usually use mousse in the morning after shampooing and conditioning my hair in the shower. Upon getting out, I immediately comb my hair, spray it with leave-in conditioner and let that soak in for a minute or two. Then, I apply my mousse to help control my naturally wavy hair.
Shake the can well to avoid a creamy flow of mousse. Then you can either turn the can upside down, or sideways, and press down on the dispenser into the palm of your hand. Work the mousse evenly through your damp hair and then style as desired. Do not rinse out.
Warning: Watch getting this stuff in your eyes accidentally…it can sting!

MY EXPERIENCE
At one point in time not so long ago, I decided to grow out my short hair. This eventually leads to styling problems with my hair. I bought Clairol Essences Extra Hold Styling Mousse to help control my overly wavy hair. If I do not put some kind of styler in my hair when getting out of the shower, I will look like a poodle by the time my hair is done drying. I also have a natural wave that makes it worse. I tried using the mousse to help control my poofy hair and bring out the natural wave instead. I was not happy with the results. Sure, I was able to style my hair nicely when it was wet…but it still dried wrong and I ended up looking like a poodle anyway. Another thing that made me more upset with this mousse was the fact that I looked like I had dandruff after I used this product, let it dry, and then re-combed my hair. Not cool!
The one good thing about this mousse is that it made my hair manageable when it was dry…which is when I usually have a hard time with it. But that was the only time…and my hair doesn’t stay wet forever! I usually found myself pulling it back before it was totally dry to help control it more. The mousse did have a nice light texture and did not leave my hands feeling sticky before I washed them.
Sometimes I prefer my hair to be straight, and other times I like the natural wave. But, I would like to control my hair and style it the way that I want. Clairol Essences Extra Hold Styling Mousse did not give me that option.
There was a reason that I bought this mousse in the first place…to leave my hair down. Let’s just say that this did not exceed my expectations at all and I am now looking for a new mousse for more manageability and definitely no flaking.
