Finding a home hair coloring product that would sucessfully cover my gray hairs has been a challenge. I tried many of the boxed hair coloring kits designed for covering gray hair and the results were always disappointing. Using a different hair coloring product every month and hoping that it would work for me and my few gray hairs became frustrating. At one point I decided to pull out the gray hairs and skip the dreadful routine of coloring. After pulling out ten gray hairs I knew this wasn't going to be a practical solution. While asking a female co-worker about her hair coloring routine I became aware of a product that I had not yet tried - Clairol Gray Busters hair color. I've been using it for a while and have been pleased with the results. I recently tried Clairol Professional Gray Busters Conditioning Color 82N Dark Neutral Blonde which is one shade lighter than my usual Gray Busters color Gray Busters Light Neutral Brown

The Gray Busting Product
Clairol Professional Gray Busters Conditioning Color No. 82N, Dark Neutral Blonde 2 oz. is a PERMANENT HAIR COLORING PRODUCT and unlike boxed hair coloring kits found in drugstores. It doesn't come with white coloring developer, post-color conditioner, or gloves. And since it's not packaged in a box there's no picture of a model with beautifully colored hair. If you've used store bought coloring kits in the past you probably already know that your color results never look like the color on the box. I think the exclusion of a box has been benefical because I'm not influenced by a picture showing a beautiful shade of hair color that's usually unattainable.
Clairol Gray Busters Conditioning Color 82N, Dark Neutral Blonde needs to be mixed with equal parts of a 20 volume creme developer. You'll need to buy the developer separately. You'll also need a hair coloring bottle for mixing and applying the color, as well as gloves.
After mixing the Clairol Gray Buster Conditioning color with 2 oz. of 20 volume creme developer I start applying the mixture on to the roots of my hair. Once all the hair color is applied to the roots I leave it on for about 20 minutes and then apply the remainder of the mixture to the rest of my hair. After another 20 minutes has passed I'm ready to wash the hair color mixture out of my hair. The manufacturer recommends leaving the product on the hair for 40 minutes, but I only leave it on the virgin root hair for that amount of time. This is what has worked best for my thin, fine, and slightly damaged hair.
I've found that the damaged ends of my hair tend to pick up too much color when the hair coloring mixture is left on for the full 40 minutes. Leaving the hair color on all my hair for the recommended length of time results in the ends looking much darker than the roots.
The mixed product smells the same as any other coloring product, it has a "chemical" type odor but it's not highly offensive to my nose. I've never had a problem with irritation, redness, or any other side effects after using this product.
The Results - Gray Hairs are no longer noticeable!
When I used the Clairol Professional Gray Busters Conditioning Color No. 82N, Dark Neutral Blonde I had about 3 inches of natural uncolored virgin hair at the roots. I usually use XXXXX but since I hadn't colored my hair for about 6 months I was able to see that my natural hair color wasn't as dark as I'd thought. Using the Dark Neutral Blonde was only one shade lighter than the previous Gray Busters I had used so I didn't think there would be much of a change in the resulting color. OPPS!
Clairol Professional Gray Busters Conditioning Color No. 82N, Dark Neutral Blonde gave me okay results. I don't have a lot of gray hair, less than 50 strands from what I could tell before using the hair color. The Dark Neutral Blonde covered most of my grays but some are still apparent because they didn't pick up much of the color. On close inspection these few strands look much lighter than the rest of my hair but no longer look obviously gray. I didn't have this problem when I used a darker shade of the Gray Busters hair color.
Another thing that I didn't like about my results is that the overall color looks too bright and golden. My natural hair color is a light ash brown which picked up too much brassy tones from the Dark Neutral Blonde Gray Busters. Even after using Red Gold Color Corrector the brassy and golden tone was present. I think the unwanted tones are due to the hair color being too light for my natural hair color. The Clairol Professional Gray Busters in the Dark Blonde color did an okay job at covering most of my grays but it certianly didn't have the strength for lifting hair color a few levels lighter than my natural color.
I've never had a problem with Gray Busters hair color fading or washing out of my hair. Once it's there it seems to stay put.
Where to Purchase Gray Busters

My hair color after using Clairol Professional Gray Busters Conditioning Color 82N, Dark Neutral Blonde was okay, just not what I wanted. I think the Gray Busters hair color works best when matching the natural color or going one shade darker. I still recommend the product for gray coverage, just not for lightening or changing the overall color of the hair.
