| hollegolightle's Full Review: Clarins Self Tanning Face Lotion |
My dermatologist is really on my case these days. "No more sun exposure." "Always wear a sunscreen of 15 SPF or higher." And so on and so forth. Truth be told, my increasingly sensitive skin really doesn't react well to baking in the sun anymore. The problem? After 20-odd years of sun-worship, I can't stand the anemic look that comes with a complete and total cessation of poolside tanning expeditions. Even I had forgotten how pale I can be. I remember trying sunless tanning products years ago. I definitely remember the embarrassing orange, streaky look they gave, and I especially remember the pungent smell that accompanied their use. I wasn't optimistic about my options. Then one name seemed to keep cropping up in articles about the best self tanners - Clarins. So I gave it a try.
The good news? Gone are the days of orange, streaky self tanners. This product comes in two shades: Light Tan and Deep Tan. I went right for the Deep Tan. (I still had the remnants of a tan from my last foray into the sun - otherwise I would probably recommend the Light Tan to start with.) It comes in a very handy pump dispenser. One push dispenses just the right amount. It has a very light smell initially and goes on very smoothly. The first time I used it, I was absolutely paranoid about blending, blending, blending the product for fear I'd have a permanent "makeup line" where the product stopped. The result was a totally natural golden-looking tan within a couple of hours. Bliss! No orange, no streaks. (It should be noted that since then, I've slathered some on quickly before bed, was much less careful about the blending, and still woke up with a totally natural result - I could learn to love this stuff!)
The downside? The initial scent of this product was quite pleasant and very light. Once it started working, though, it smelled like every other self tanner I've used in the past. Those of you who've used them know what I mean - that somewhat pungent self tanner smell. My husband hates it and complains when I put on "that stinky stuff." Like all self tanners, you'll want to be very thorough in washing your hands after application - it will stain your hands and nails if you don't.
The bottom line is that Clarins reputation as "the best of the best" in self tanners is well deserved. I think their products are certainly worth the extra money. (It is your FACE, after-all...) An unexpected benefit of this line is that I'm loving the time I save with it - no more trying to amuse myself for a couple of hours by the pool. No more remembering to flip at equal intervals for fear my tan will be uneven. I just smooth on some lotion and I'm off to live my life. Not bad!
A few notes on ingredients: I can't find any ingredients in this that should be especially irritating. As I mentioned, I have fairly sensitive skin and haven't had any problems at all. It does contain sesame oil, which is somewhat comedogenic and may cause breakouts for some.
