I didn’t have hay-fever type allergies all my life. They developed about twenty years ago, around the time I was seventeen. Since then I’ve trued various medications and even gone for shots for a period of time. While the shots were effective, the regularity with which I needed to maintain them due to my pet allergy and my desire to keep all my furry friends made it difficult and I eventually gave up. From time to time I suffered, but it was nothing I couldn’t live with. Until this spring. Even with my allergies at their worst, I never had trouble breathing. That changed in the last month. I’d lay in bed with my heart pounding, finally realizing what it was like for people who suffered with breathing problems on a regular basis. Something had to give, but with three kids I needed to be awake. I keep Benadryl in the house for my oldest daughter’s occasional hives and in case I get stung by a bee (another allergy). However, that will usually knock me out, so unless it’s a time when I have nothing else to do for the day, taking Benadryl is not an option. Claritin used to only be available by prescription. I could remember trying at one time and finding it effective for my season allergies. It is an antihistamine whose primary active ingredient is 10 mg. Of Lortadine. The package also touts the fact that Claritin Allergy 24-Hour Redi-Tabs aren’t supposed to make you drowsy. Despite the hefty price tag, I decided to give it a try this spring when my breathing became so bad. I bought a package of 30 Claritin Allergy 24-Hour Redi-Tabs from BJs Wholesale Club. The package contains three foil-sealed pouches, each containing ten Redi-Tabs in a blister pack. The foil on the back of the blister pack must be peeled back to access a Redi-Tab. Do not attempt to push the tablet through the foil. Claritin Allergy 24-Hour Redi-Tabs are different in that you don’t need water to take them. I’ve never had a problem swallowing pills. In fact, I’ve often dry-swallowed pills such as Advil or Tylenol when the need arose. However, the thought of not having to worry about finding a glass of water should I feel like it was sitting in my throat appealed to me. I simply place the Tab on my tongue and it melts. Within a half-hour, my allergies have consistently felt much better, if not disappearing entirely. With the season being so bad, I would sometimes still experience a bit of a runny nose, but my breathing difficulty, itchy and watery eyes, and raspy throat would disappear (the last much to my family’s chagrin). Inactive Ingredients: Citric acid, gelatin, mannitol, mint flavor Package Warnings: Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this product or any of its ingredients. They are a more expensive allergy-relief drug, and the Redi-Tab version costs a bit more than tablets, but I feel they are well worth it. I recommend them as they worked very well for me with no side effects and were quite easy to use, especially when there’s not a glass of water available. This medicine is approved for purchase with a FSA (flexible spending account).
