| toiletoctopus's Full Review: Claritin 24 Hour Allergy Tablets 10 Each |
When Claritin went from prescription to over the counter in 2002, it was an answer to many prayers. People with allergies to trees, grasses, and weeds suffer terribly. I know from first hand experience, because I've had allergies to these items all of my life. I've tried every type of medicine(prescription and non)and have had varying results. Here's some basic information about Claritin 10 mg tablets.
Claritin is manufactured by Schering-Plough Healthcare Products, which is based in Memphis, TN. They can be reached at 1-800-252-7484, or on their website.(www.claritin.com) The main ingredient of Claritin is Loratadine, which is an antihistamine. The inactive ingrdients are corn starch, lactose monohydrate, and magnesium stearate. It reduces allergy symptoms of runny nose, itching eyes, itching throat/nose, and sneezing. The dose is one tablet per 24 hours, and it is recommended to take at the same time daily. You can take it if you are over 6 years old, and it is non-drowsy.
My opinion of Claritin is it is much better than other non-prescription allergy medicines. It drastically reduces the symptoms of allergies-especially the constant sneezing and runny nose. It definetly is non-drowsy-I have never felt tired while taking it. Claritin has helped out a lot with the grasses, trees, but is limited against pet dander. I took it over a span of three months and noticed it helped out a lot, and there are no side effects at all. A lot of the other non-prescriptions such at Tavist and Benadryl put me to sleep or cause dizziness. Also, many of the other non-prescription allergy medicines are not for people with elevated high blood pressure.(Of course, always confer with a doctor before taking any medicine.)
Another major advantage of Claritin is its readily available. All major grocery stores, drugstores, and even some gas stations carry it. All you have to do is look for the blue box with the clouds and green field on it. The price is quite reasonable-if you buy in quantity its now about 50 cents per pill. I bought boxes of 10 for $6.99 at my local grocery store, and coupons are often available through newspapers and other publications. The Claritin of today is as strong as the original prescription.
Here is my one complaint: Its not as strong as some of the newer prescriptions such as Flonase and Zyrtec. I'm now on these, and they do a much better job. The Zyrtec lasts the same as Claritin-24 hours, and is much more effective. I do not sneeze, have a runny nose, or suffer from watery red eyes with Zyrtec. I use the Flonase (2 sprays) a day to complement it, and this is the drug therapy that has worked best for me.(Except for Seldane D, which was taken off the market due to some safety concerns.) These drugs work better against all allergens, including pet dander and cigarette smoke. The only thing is the Zyrtec is best taken at night, because it makes you a little drowsy for the first couple weeks of use! However, with its availability and price Claritin is great, especially for people without health insurance.(Or if you run out of the prescriptions.) I would recommend Claritin, because it is effective for what it is. If you go to their website at Claritin.com, you can get a $3.00 off coupon. Not bad for a reasonably priced product that does the job it claims!
