Help, I've Lost the Use of My Nose!

Pros:Opens up sinuses; Long lasting relief; Tamper resistant packaging

Cons:Large pills hard to swallow; High price per pill

The Bottom Line: Claritin D is an effective product for allergy and sinus sufferers.

Sinus problems are one of the few health issues I am faced with and they also rank as the one I am most constantly plagued by. During the colder time of the year, my problems are exceptionally annoying and it is common for me to go for long periods of time unable to smell or taste food. Warmer weather signals an end to this problem but during the cooler season when I am forced to deal with sinus issues, I usually turn to cold and sinus tablets to eliminate the problems. And one that I use every now and then is Claritin D Allergy and Congestion Tablets, a product that provides long lasting relief from sinus problems.

Basic Facts About This Product:

Claritin D is sold in tablet form and the tablets themselves are oval in shape. They are larger than most others, measuring about 12 mm in length and about 5 mm in width, making them a little more of a chore to swallow than most other pills.

Claritin D takes original Claritin a step further by offering relief from congestion. This product can be used for relief of sneezing, sinus congestion, itchy eyes, watery eyes, itchy nose and throat, and sinus pressure. It does not directly eliminate headaches, but the elimination of sinus pressure can help alleviate one of the problems that often lead to headaches.

This drug is formulated so that one pill lasts a full twenty- four hours. The manufacturer recommends taking one pill each day as needed, with a glass of water. The pill needs to be swallowed whole to be effective.

Ingredients:

Claritin D is made using the Active Ingredients Loratadine 10 mg (Antihistamine), and Pseudoephedrine Sulfate 240 mg (Nasal Decongestant). Inactive Ingredients include Carnauba Wax, Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, Ethylcellulose, Hydroxypropylcellulose, Hypromellose, Magnesium Stearate, Pharmaceutical Ink, Polyethylene Glycol, Povidone, Silicon Dioxide, Sugar, Titanium Dioxide, and White Wax

Final Thoughts:

Claritin D is one of several different sinus medications that I use during the cooler time of the year when sinus problems become an issue. My problems are triggered by cold weather and it is common for me to go a full day at a time (or longer) during the coldest time of the year without the use of my senses of smell or taste.

Fortunately, there are plenty of effective drugs to help deal with this problem and Claritin D is one of them. This product offers the advantage of prescription strength without having to get a doctor’s prescription. As many people already know, Claritin was once a prescription only product and I can remember people talking about it and pointing out how effective it was for relief of allergies and other conditions. Today, this product is sold over the counter for a relatively low price compared to its earlier days. It helps to eliminate or control problems like sinus congestion, itchy eyes and throat, and other symptoms brought on by sinus problems and allergies.

My experience with Claritin D has been positive and I can often tell a difference just a short time after taking a pill. Within the first hour, my sinuses will slowly open up and the pressure will gradually disappear. It won’t necessarily go away completely, but I can certainly tell a difference. Often, it is just enough relief that I can regain the ability to breathe through my nose and resume life as normal. The relief will usually last one full day and beyond.

Many allergy/sinus products have the clear disadvantage of causing drowsiness but not Claritin D. In fact, some people claim that Claritin D has the opposite effect: That it causes insomnia instead of sleepiness. I have not experienced this problem but I admit that I tend to take this product in the morning- when I don’t want to fall asleep- so I can’t really say whether or not it does cause insomnia. I think I will continue to play it safe and take the pills as far away from bedtime as possible. Other than this possibility, I have not noticed any other side effects.

One problem many people will have with these pills is swallowing them whole. They are larger than the average tablet and they often take more than one try to get them down. Some may be tempted to cut the pills in smaller pieces but you must resist this temptation because it will lessen the effectiveness. If you start with a full glass of water, you should be able to get the full tablet into your stomach after a couple of tries.

Claritin D tablets are packaged in individual blister packs to keep them dry and secure. One should not take a tablet if the blister pack has been tampered with. Also, these pills are designed for people age 12 and up. Children under 12, people with heart disease, people with thyroid problems, people with high blood pressure, people with liver or kidney disease, and people with an enlarged prostate should not take these tablets except under the guidance of a physician. And, of course, you should never take this product if you have an allergy to pseudoephedrine, loratadine, or any of the other ingredients.

One annoyance with Claritin D is the problems associated with making a purchase. It used to be that you could grab a box of Claritin D right off the store shelf and make a purchase. But thanks to the failed efforts to control drugs, Claritin D is now sold behind the counter. You don’t need a prescription to buy it, but you must present your ID so they can make sure you're not in trouble with the law for attempting to manufacture methamphetamine. Because pseudoephedrine is used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, this law was enacted to attempt to crack down on the existance of Meth Labs. This adds an obstacle to the purchase process but (for now anyway) it is an easy hurdle to jump.

Claritin D costs more than most other allergy medicines, often selling for anywhere from 80 cents to $1.30 per pill (about $24 for a box of 30 or $13 for a box of ten). They are sometimes tough to swallow and they take extra effort to purchase. But they are affective at opening up sinus passages and eliminating the annoyances caused by allergies. I alternate these tablets with Benydryl and other over the counter drugs in order to save a little money and take advantage of the relief that each has to offer. But price or not, Claritin D is a good product and for the relief it provides, I think the cost is justified.
