Disney Starts at 'One' Again.

Pros:It's Disney
Cons:If you love Disney music, you already have one of the variations of this release.
The Bottom Line: Nice compilation with very few sleepers. I like the CD cover art.
It seems that every decade or close to it, the folks at Disney release compilation albums from their movies and/or theme parks. What we have here is strictly movies on this volume one, and mostly from the animated movies.
Most of these songs have appeared on the five volume Classic Disney CDs that came out in the early to mid nineties. There are just three exceptions that weren't included on last decade's compilation and that's probably only due to the fact of release dates.
Here we have the relatively recent Strangers Like Me from Tarzan. Phil Collins came in and had written and recorded the soundtrack in the Randy Newman style of Toy Story. While Randy Newman's effort appeared effortlessly brilliant, Phil Collins contribution is mediocre at best. The song is very much Phil Collins' style, that 1980's British pop/contempory soft rock sound, which he has written so many times, the same type of song in the same vein. He has surley mastered the art and cornered this market. While the song works much better within the context of the movie, on it's own it is revealed for what it really is, bland and boring.
Another song that was too new to appear on the older CD series is Mulan's Reflection. With Mulan, the soundtrack stands out better on its own merits and this is a nice choice added to this collection. This is a sweet ballad.
Hercules in my opinion is sort of a mediocre movie, with an even worse soundtrack.
Out There from The Hunchback From Notre Dame is the same league as Hercules. Bad movie, bad soundtrack, we're almost getting to the point where these first few songs were a bad choice to start off this Disney collection.
As for the rest of these songs, we do have them appear on last decade's five volume Disney anthology Classic Disney. All of these are classic Disney songs that are popular and much loved by fans and some others that are fans of good music.
A superb start to this true Disney section of songs is Randy Newman's perfect You've Got A friend In Me from the Toy Story movies. The song is very much a Newman song, a fun poppy classic tune with great lyrics.
Just Around The Riverbend from Pocahontas is a great song, yet not from one of Disney's finest movies. This song like most of these falls into the same music genre, which I like to describe as Disney. It's a cross between contemporary/easy listening and Broadway musical style. This is true usually of all the Disney soundtracks, except for the very early or the soundtracks by Phil Collins or Randy Newman.
Julie Andrews has one of the greatest singing voices ever recorded. Here we have the fun and sunny Supercalifragilisticexpeialidocious from the classic movie Mary Poppins, (which I still have not seen in it's entirety yet).
The Little Mermaid has one of the greatest soundtracks ever. Kiss The Girl is a wonderful example of how magical a soundtrack it is. The song is like a calypso ballad that starts so simple and ends so big.
Disney's Aladdin is another one of Disney masterpiece soundtracks. The music created started out spectacular, and when Howard Ashman dies before the project was completed, another master lyricist was called to complete it, one Tim Rice of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Lion King fame.
A Whole New World is one of Howard Ashman's creations, and here it fits in nicely yet at the same time stands out as a bonafide gem. A love song, baladeered by Aladdin to his new love of promises of better things to come. The lyrics, the music and the mood are triple-swirled into a musical aquafresh. Oh boy, that last line, is a bit much, but hopefully you'll get the idea.
Twenty songs, twenty classic Disney songs. Do these newer songs from Disney's more recent movies qualify as Classic as well. Time will tell, I don't think so yet, yet with Disney in time even the bad is good.
