Oh how I painfully remember so well how it feels to hit puberty and then suddenly discover all of those ugly, unattractive blackheads and pimples that often go along with the whole process. Unfortunately, I have passed this self confidence draining trait along to my 12 year old daughter, Kelsey, so she is currently beginning the life long battle for clearer skin just as I have been fighting for almost 20 years now. Now that she's a 7th grade middle school student and a cheerleader to boot, her physical appearance is now more important than ever to her. So recently I have been investing in a variety of skin care products for her to help control her oily, acne prone skin. One such topical medication I've purchased for her is this Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent made by Johnson & Johnson. Since blackheads seem to be her biggest problem so far, this astringent sounded like an effective product to control breakouts. And over the past few weeks of somewhat regular use, she is slowing beginning to notice an improvement in the severity of blackheads that accumulate on her face.

This Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent contains 1% Salicylic Acid and is designed to help treat and prevent blackheads in the treatment of acne. And just what is a blackhead? According to my Mosby's Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Dictionary (Copyright 1994), a blackhead is: the basic lesion of acne vulgaris, caused by an accumulation of keratin and sebum with the opening of a hair follicle. It is dark because of the effect of oxygen on sebum, not because of the presence of dirt. Not quite as medicinal in fragrance as many other astringents often are, this formula contains a fresh, pleasing scent and leaves skin feeling cool and tingly. Excess dirt left behind after cleansing is removed and pores are bathed with this moderately medicated acne care product with each use. The alcohol content is quite high, however, so those that are prone to dryness or have sensitive skin should apply with caution. Oily skin types who have problems with blackhead may find that this Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent is just what their face requires to help control excess breakouts and blemishes.

According to the packaging directions found on Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent, first wash the skin thoroughly with an acne fighting cleanser before applying this topical medication. Moisten a cotton ball or cotton round with a moderate amount of this astringent and smooth it all over your face one to three times daily. Kelsey primarily uses hers after her shower in the evening and in the morning upon awakening to help keep her blackheads under control. I keep her bathroom stocked with plenty of cotton balls so that she can more easily apply this medicated skin care product to her face every day. Of course she still has a long way to go in order to achieve major results as I often have to remind her to use her acne care products more consistently, but we've certainly seen a noticeable improvement in the number and severity of blackheads recently as a result of using this Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent. And because of this, she is happier and has more self confidence in herself as she enters the turbulent teenage years, which is most definitely a plus in my book.

~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
While I found this Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent to be too harsh for my thirty something adult skin, teens and young adults may find that the moderate concentration of Salicylic Acid is just what their oily, acne prone skin types are in need of. Just be aware of the high alcohol content and gradually increase usage to prevent excess drying of the skin. But in my experience, Salicylc Acid containing medications are much less irritating than those with Benzoyl Peroxide, so your results may vary. Give this relatively inexpensive Clean & Clear Blackhead Clearing Astringent a try today if blackheads are a problem for you or your teenager.
