| MumMumMum's Full Review: Clear Away One-Step Wart Remover for Kids |
By the age of 7 my son had already been suffering from warts on one hand for two years. He told me it didn’t bother him, but one day came home crying because the kids had been “bugging” him about them. I then decided it was time to do something about the warts, and took my son to his pediatrician. The doctor recommended an over the counter medication, and told me that Scholl products worked quite well. If we weren’t able to get rid of the warts using this product then we should come back to see him and he’d try another medication. So off to the drug store we went.
My son and I were quite impressed when we discovered that Dr. Scholl’s makes a product specifically for kids. It’s called the Dr. Scholl’s Clear Away One Step Wart Remover System for Kids, and my boy thought that was just great! With our purchase paid for we went home to try it out.
What is this “One Step System” and how does it work?
The package claims fast, effective removal in an easy, one-step application. Upon opening the box you find 12 medicated strips in assorted fun designs. Basically what these strips are are brightly coloured bandaids with a medicated circle on the pad portion of the bandaid. The medicated portion of the pad is easily identifiable because it is a dark brown circle surrounded by the white pad. The medication penetrates the wart and loosens the skin for easy removal. The medicinal ingredient is Salicylic Acid 40% w/w in a rubber based vehicle.
The directions indicate that you are to wash the affected area and dry thoroughly. Apply the medicated pad directly over the wart. Repeat this procedure every 48 hours as needed, until the wart is removed, up to 12 weeks. It also indicates that you should secure the adhesive strip securely to the skin when applying the medicated strip to the wart. If you’re taking notes, I will be addressing this later.
Who should use this product?
Well, kids with warts, obviously! Unless you’re an adult that really likes to draw attention to your hands via brightly coloured bandaids! But, seriously, I took my son to the doctor to ask him about the warts, but I already knew they were warts. If you are unsure as to if it is a wart or not, here is some information regarding common warts.
Most warts appear on fingers, hands and feet, but they can also appear on other parts of the body. They can be distinguished by its rough, raised, cauliflower-like surface, unlike a mole or a blemish. Untreated warts can spread because they are caused by an infectious virus. If left untreated one wart can cause more warts, or it can transmit the virus to another person. If you are still unsure, please consult with your doctor or pediatrician!
Who shouldn’t use this product?
There is a warning on the information sheet that comes with this product that you should not use this product if you are a diabetic, or if you have poor blood circulation. You also should not use this product on irritated skin, on any area that is infected or reddened, and it is for external use only! You should not use this product on moles, birthmarks, warts with hair growing from them, genital warts or warts on the face or mucous membranes.
What did we think of this product? Would we recommend it?
My son was quite happy with this product for the first week, but quickly tired of the bright bandaids drawing attention to his hands. We both were quite unhappy with the fact that these medicated strips kept tearing apart and falling off. The strips are made of an almost papery material, that just cannot withstand the day to day activities of a seven year old, and would have to be replaced daily instead of every 24 hours. Also, although the directions state that you should secure the adhesive strip securely to the skin, this was impossible to do, resulting in the medicated portion moving around his finger and thus medicating the non-wart area! We found that we had to cover the medicated strips with more secure bandaids in order to keep the strip from tearing and moving. This defeated the purpose of the “fun design strips”. I did find that the strips were effective in dissolving the wart, but the added cost of more bandaids and having to use extra strips was a huge negative. If Dr. Scholl’s changes the bandaids to a more securely attaching and durable strip it will definitely improve the product immensely! It also will increase peace of mind to know that the medication is indeed being distributed to the infected area, and not to non-infected areas. This would greatly increase the effectiveness of the product.
That being the case I cannot recommend this particular product. But we did find another product that we found to be more effective, but that’s another epinion. Stay tuned for Part 2!
Please note: As with any medicine you should keep this product our of reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Centre immediately!
