Clearasil Ultra. Ultra-Staining that is!

Written: Apr 12 '05
Pros:Lasts 3+ Months
Cons:Stains, causes redness and irritation, Tacky Package. Expensive.
The Bottom Line: Do not use.

Packaging: The Product is wrapped in a tacky, reflective box, and expensive at 10.00$+ a tube. However, the tube does last quite a while (about 3+ months).

Initial Results: Well, initially it did help with skin, but after a while it did absolutely nothing. So I assume it would work as a spot treatment once a month or so, but it is not effective as I thought it would be. It clearly does NOT fulfill the "clear in 3 days or less, guaranteeed" statement on the box, and in the advertisments.

Applying: When you apply, you have to make sure to rub it in, otherwise it will become white and cakey, and also peel. While a little of the product goes a long way, it really did not help against any pimples at all. In fact, it would my skin where I applied would become red and blotchy, even if that would fade after a couple of minutes. I did also notice mild itching and irritation if I applied more often than once in day.

Bad News: It has 10% Benzoyl Peroxide, which is a LOT. For people that have sensitive skin, it will most likely cause redness and peeling, which it did for me. Also, it has no sunscreen of any sort, and the product label itself HIGHLY recommends sunscreen, so this is probably REALLY bad for your skin if you do not put sunscreen on it. In fact, the sunscreen warnings are so prevalent that one has to wonder what kind of damage you are doing to your skin.

Stains!: This stuff is STRONG. Horribly strong. Stated on the package is that it can cause staining of hair and fabrics. It stains terribly. While my hair did get lighter around my face, it was not very noticable. However,my towels became a nightmare. I had several green towels that become orange EVEN though I washed my hands after using this. I applied it to my face, washed my hands vigorously and then wiped my hands on the towel. The stains would appear within 48 hours or so, but not immediately. Oh, and they are not removable. Basically, it has something of a bleaching effect. That proves irreversable.

Conclusion:

Yay!:
- Could work ok as a spot treatment
- Fair amount of product in tube

Nay!:
- Causes Irritation and Itchyness
- Causes Redness
- Doesn't work after a while
- Peels off
- Stains fabrics TERRIBLY
- High % of Benzoyl Peroxide
- Tacky Packaging
- Expensive, for what it is.

For those using a spot treatment, I would recommend Neutrogena-on-the-Spot Acne Treatment, Vanishing. It is about half the price and only half the product of Clearasil Ultra, but it only has 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide and is milder. I felt it was more effective than this treatment.
