Cleveland 588 Wedges:Ups and Downs

Written: Jun 04 '04 (Updated Jun 05 '04)
Pros:Control, accuracy and feel...
Cons:Hard to clean and scratches very easily...
The Bottom Line: For better control on you delicate pitch and chip shots, go for the Cleveland 588 wedges. You won't be disappointed.

For a along time I have been wanting to switch to some newer wedges(at that time were Titleist Vokey Wedges). I had the distance perfect with all three lofts, 52, 56, and 60 degrees. The only reason I had trouble switching was that my Vokeys were doing great. So I decided to test some new wedges out and see if I liked them.

I ended up getting the Cleveland wedges because of similarities with my old Vokeys. I got them in 51, 56, and 60 degrees of loft for more selection 100 or so yards in. Size and shape were almost identical while performance was just as good, even better.

Look

As I said, the look is very similar to the Titleist Vokeys. The head is very rounded in the edges. Despite the shape, it is very easy to get the wedges through sand, rough and tight fairways. The chrome is very nice visually when you first get them. The chrome gets dirty very easily and, for some reason, is hard to clean. The turf gets into those tiny crevices and the Cleveland name on the sole. The grooves get really dirty so you have to either use a sharp tool of some sort but a tee works fine to get those deep stains. Nevertheless, look wise, the 588 excels in this department.

Shaft and Grip

The grip is amazingly comfortable and easy on the hands. I usually don't like to use gloves with wedges because it gives me more feel. The grip won't slide out of your hands even with sweat and some rain while the shaft is made by True Temper, no certain flex or type, just a normal steel wedge shaft. It seems stiffer than a normal wedge, which I like because it makes me have a bit more control on my shots. The shaft and grip work in perfect harmony with each other.

Performance

I love the control you have with the 588. When you first get them, they are very shiny and have a lot of glare. It gets very annoying and sometimes you try to keep it a little dirty, especially on the face. You can't really do anything bad with this club. Shanks are not very common and at most you either chunk it or hit it thin. It won't go too off target because it is a rather heavy club. This extra weight keeps it in tempo and on plane.

Chipping

The 588 is useful around the green. On the fringe it's a killer. Use the 51 degree for a bump-n-run to tuck it close to the hole. For close range shots, all you have to do is gauge the distance and follow through and usually it will release a few feet. While over obstacles such as bunkers and water hazards it's easy to use a 60 degree wedge and pop it over. If you applied enough spin it will either stick or release only a foot or so. In other words, the wedge is easy to chip with and won't cause too many errors around the green.

110 and in

For those longer and more delicate approach shots from a 110 and below, the 51 and 56 degree works magic. I usually hit my 51 degree about a 105-107 yards with a full swing. I'm still trying to work out the kinks, toning down on the distance and trying to be more delicate. Anyway the 588 is a perfect tool for those long approach shots that require accuracy and control. It will have you finding your way up and down in the toughest spots.

Conclusion

All in all, the Cleveland 588 wedges are a must. They deliver great control and accuracy with little to no effort. Besides the occasional chips and scratches, the 588 will endure golf's most challenging tests.
