Freak369's Full Review: Doreen Cronin - Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type
Everyone once in a while someone recommends a book to me that they swear will have me rolling on the floor in laughter. I was at a local bookstore trying to track down one of the last books in a grimoire series and asked if there was something kid related that I could get for a little girl that loves animals. It had to have a little humor in it but not something that was flat out silly. The girl behind the counter smiled and asked me if I ever heard of Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type. The title alone had me laughing but when I got done reading it I knew little Annabelle would fall in love with this book. As an adult I like to check out what is on the market for kids sometimes I just like to pick up one of their books and start reading it for a good laugh or a smile. Suffice it to say, if youve never heard of this book or read it, you are in for a good time when you share it with a child.
Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type
Farmer Brown seems like a nice enough guy; he has a farm with chickens, cows and ducks I am sure there are others on the farm but this story just deals with these three animals. The cows feel that the barn is too cold for them so they type out a note asking the farmer for some electric blankets. Oh, hed heard the typing coming from the barn but said that it was impossible for cows to type. When he got the note he said no way, cows just dont need electric blankets. Their retort was to go on strike. When he say the note Sorry. Were closed. No milk today he almost went over the edge. To make things worse the next ay the farmer saw a note that not only did the cows want electric blankets but now the chickens want them too. Things reached the breaking point when he saw the sign No milk. No eggs on the barn door.
How can I run a farm with no milk and no eggs?. Then the farmer got the bright idea that he would end this once and for all. He typed out a note of his own saying that would be no electric blankets and that he demanded milk and eggs. This is where you are introduced to Duck, hes the one that carries the notes back and forth between the cows and chickens and Farmer Brown from this point on. The cows deliberated and offered the farmer a deal; they would swap the typewriter for electric blankets. Duck delivered the message the next morning. He thought that this would be a simple solution to the problem; the cows wouldnt have the typewriter so they wouldnt be able to demand more things and finally he could get his milk and eggs.
Things take a little twist when the farmer is waiting for Duck to bring the typewriter to him; hed already given the cows and chickens the electric blankets. What was the hold up? Duck, being a smart duck at that, decided that he might as well get something out of the deal. He did a lot of walking and without his help no one would be satisfied. Instead of Duck delivering the typewriter he got yet another note, this time from the ducks. The pond is very boring. Wed like a diving board. You never get to see the reaction of Farmer Brown but on the next page you see one very happy duck jumping off a diving board.
My Take
I have to admit, no matter how many times I read this I still laugh when I read about the farmer typing to get his milk and eggs. This is a very cute book for kids in the three to eight year range but honestly, it can be enjoyed by anyone. There is one thing that I wish was added to the book; the cows type and it goes click, clack, moo, the ducks type and it goes click, clack, quack. Why arent the chicken typing? You cant tell me that cows and ducks can type but chickens cant. The book is written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin and the two work great together on this one. After I got hooked on this book someone recommended Duck For President which is just as entertaining as Click, Clack, Moo with some things added just for adults to snicker at.
The Bottom Line
All in all this is one of the cutest books Ive read in a long time. Since most of my reading revolves around Halloween related things, hauntings and of course school books this was a welcome change to have on the table. Its the kind of book that you can pick up and read in a few minutes but come away from it with a huge smile on your face. I highly recommend this to any teacher, care giver, day care provider or parent that wants to give their kids a little giggle! The illustrations are basic but really add a lot to the story, its easy to read and kids love to shout out Click, clack, mooooooooooo during the story. I picked this up in hardcover for $7.50 from a local bookstore [this was very gently used] but if youd prefer to have a new one, the suggested retail piece is $15.00. Not bad for something that kids will love to read over and over again!
