Pros: VERY moisturizing, nice dewy finish, fills in fine lines and plumps skin up a bit
Cons: This shade of Cream isn't for those with very fair skin with pink undertones
The Bottom Line: A fine makeup for dry skin with fine lines. This shade of "Cream" is for fair skin, but not very fair skin with pink undertones like mine!

| hempem's Full Review: Clinique: Dewy Smooth Anti Aging Makeup SPF15 02 C... |
Clinique foundations have been around for years. I remember thinking how glamorous my Grandmother was for using her Clinique skincare 3-step program and makeup. I tried hers, but it was always too dark for my skin, and felt greasy to boot!
Estee Lauder is the parent company of Clinique, as is MAC. I never cared for Estee Lauder products, and I've never tried MAC, but I've always been a fan of the easy and friendly makeup products Clinique has offered. "Think Bronze" lipstick carried me through college, and I just ordered another tube last month. With skin that is oily and breakout-prone, I used Clinique liquid oil-free foundation that was as runny as water and dried to a powder finish . . . truly not one of my favorite foundations I've tried, but I wasn't familiar with too many other brands like Prescriptives or Bare Escentuals, so I stuck with it for several years.
Now I find myself with skin that is troubled in the T-zone, but drying out elsewhere, and so I recently purchased over the Internet (www.macys.com) a bottle of Clinique's Dewy Smooth Anti-Aging Makeup in "Cream" for $22.00.
I had been using mineral makeup for about a year. Bare Escentuals, to be exact. In spite of the hype over mineral makeup, I found the powder to be terribly difficult to apply around my oily nose with larger pores. It would clump and get patchy. I also noticed how it brought out the fine lines around my eyes so dramatically I might as well have highlighted them in neon . . . LOOK AT MY EYES! I'M PUSHING 40!
But the coverage I got on the other areas of my face was good with mineral makeup, and I did like the airbrushed look, so I stuck with my Bare Escentuals for a long time. I think I overlooked the dryness - even to the point of feeling the need to scratch my face sometimes.
When I first received my bottle of Clinique's Dewy Smooth, I noticed immediately that the color was too dark for my fair skin. I had ordered what I felt was the "fairest of them all" online . . . the Cream shade.
The second thing I noticed was the consistency, which was thick and reminded me of my Grandmother's foundation. Yikes. What had I gotten myself into?
But when I put this stuff on . . . and I just used my fingers (gasp), I was totally impressed. It made my face look FANTASTIC! And it felt moisturized, too, without being greasy or oily. Under my eyes I noticed good coverage for my slightly dark circles, but it didn't set into the fine lines and creases like the mineral powder makeup did, and I liked that a lot. In fact, the box states that this is a line minimizing formula. I have larger pores on my nose that bother me, and it was difficult for me to evenly apply mineral makeup to cover them, but Dewy Smooth easily gave me a satiny finish and covered without caking.
This makeup spreads easily on the face, and although the coverage is described as moderate, I would classify it as full-coverage. I noticed on the box that this foundation is recommended for dry/delicate to normal skin, or the Clinique skin-typing system would be for types I and II. I have oily/combination skin. It works for me, but it IS heavier than any foundation I've tried before, including Prescriptives. This is probably because it doesn't even claim to be an oil-free foundation, it claims to be "ultra-moisturizing" right on the box.
The foundation has an SPF of 15, which is far lower than my fair skin needs. This is probably the only complaint I have. When worn all day long, my skin does feel a bit greasy/shiny in the T-zone. But I don't blame the foundation for this, I blame my own oil production, which shines through even when I'm using mineral foundation.
If your goal is to look dewy and have a glow to your skin instead of a matte finish like powder foundation, I read somewhere that you should apply this with a cosmetic sponge that is slightly wet and not apply powder afterward. I have tried this and it works. But I'm still one to prefer using my fingers!
Ingredients: Lots and lots of chemicals. This is NOT a "natural" product to put on your face. There are over 50 ingredients, and much to my chagrin, www.clinique.com does NOT offer the ingredients on the website.
The active ingredient is Titanium Dioxide at 4.8%, and the first ingredient is purified water. Beyond this, I see a lot of words ending in "cone" which means you are putting a layer of something that coats the face much like silicone products for hair to enhance shine. Use makeup remover and cleanser to get this stuff off your face before you go to bed, in other words.
This foundation is mid-range at $22.00, very moisturizing and perfect for skin that has fine lines because it seems to plump it up and gives a dewy finish just like the name. I recommend it for dry or normal skin types; probably not for those who have acne all over the face or breakouts in the T-zone.
I have seen it listed for as high as $45.00 online, so don't pay any more than $22.50, which is what the actual Clinique website will charge for this foundation.
Thanks for reading,
Melissa
