pbyaeger's Full Review: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotio...
Somewhere in the faraway land of Clinique, where women have clear complexions and men smell faintly of soap, a river must flow with Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, a Clinique staple for many years. (The stuff's been around since I started using Clinique in high school--more than 20 years ago.)
And, since the Clinique Oompa-Loompahs already have perfect skin, they must bottle this DDML night and day. But they're generous folks--compelled to share it with the world.
Well, they can stop.
No really. Since the inception of Clinique, ruler of the "gift with purchase" concept, I don't think there's been more than one free gift that hasn't included a little bottle or tube of this buttery lemon yellow stuff. Every American woman probably has at least 12 drying in her makeup drawer.
And for what?
The product isn't that great. Clinique claims it's hypoallergenic but this customer's mildly sensitive skin bubbled with new bumps and mini-spots less than a week after she smoothed it on.
It is fairly thin and not overly greasy, but T-zone skin will shine more readily when lightly coated with DDML. For a product supposedly suitable for all skins, this effect seems unacceptable.
Clinique obviously thought so too, as they recently released a second formula, called Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Aimed at younger, oilier skins, this "little sister" was touted as the lighter solution to those moisturizing needs.
Flushed in the Clinique chair at Bloomingdales, I felt the technician (oh can't we just call her what she is--a saleslady?) gently pat it all over my face. Instant cooling sensation. Ahhh. Not quite as thick as DDML, but with that similar non-scent. My skin drank it up and was slightly less shiny.
Sucker that I am, I bought it, just so I could cart home yet another gift with purchase (giving the Oompa-Loompahs another reason to go on living). Yes, I now had both versions in my combination/sensitive skin hands.
For two months, I used both--DDML on the right cheek, DDMG on the left. There was utterly no difference. My skin appeared bumpy, flaky, and dull. In fact, when I gave up this week and went scurrying back to Prescriptives (also one of the Estee Lauder brands, just like Clinique)their technician pronounced my normally soft cheeks "dry and angry."
Just two days after stopping DDML and DDMG, the bumps are down, the flakiness is subsiding, and I am banishing myself (and my credit cards) from the land of Clinique.
