| ethereal05's Full Review: Clinique Everyday Cleansing Shampoo |
I've struggled with my hair for longer than I will like to remember. But I have some sort of an answer in Clinique's haircare system and this shampoo is simply indispensable in the 3-step system of cleanse, condition and style (I use their Daily Shampoo, Dramatic Moisture Conditioner and Perfectly Straight Straightening Balm for my thick, wavy hair) that if I were to run out of money one day and can only purchase one product from their hair care line, this is it. I shall proceed to tell you why.
My Hair
I have slight natural waves in my hair that it so thick that all my hairdressers comment about its thickness whenever they have to style my hair. I dislike the waves so I tried several ways to "iron out" the waves to get it as sleek as possible. But while everyone gets the impression that my hair is more under the "straight" category, my intervention with nature has created several problems. Prior to using this haircare system, it never looks as good as I would like it to. Because of the daily blow-drying, my hair is kind of dry. I will hesitate to describe it as "fried" but it definitely does not have enough moisture to look healthy. Top that damage with my tendency to color my hair once every two months or so and you get the picture.
So everyone asks why do I not simply pick a shampoo and conditioner that is for dry/ damaged hair? The answer is that I have an oily scalp. I can go out with hair that has some volume in the morning and return home after midnight with lank, oily hair, especially around the bangs area. This problem had me stumped for a long time. Hairdressers tell me to choose shampoos for oily/limp hair but those sold outside are just too harsh for my hair, especially since I like to wash my hair everyday, and tends to give my hair too much body so that I can't create my favourite sleek look with success. The humidity here is also the nemesis of my hair. If I use a shampoo for dry hair to protect my abused, long hair (I had hair halfway down my back for more than three years but I recently went for the big cut), I can end up with grease near the scalp area even before dinner time. So what's a girl to do?
Enters Clnique Daily Shampoo
I was skeptical when I was given a generous sample of this shampoo but since I have heard rave reviews from friends in the States who had tried it earlier, and since I have had some success with Clinique's skin care system and I didn't even have to expend a single cent on the sample, I tried it. One thing I was impressed about is that the products are not simply labelled for dry, normal or oily hair since I have come to realize that such labels are basically useless. A person like me can have an oily scalp and still have dry hair and split ends and since shampoos are meant to cleanse the scalp while treating hair with respect, one with dry hair can end up with the wrong shampoo ie. the shampoo "for dry hair".
Clinique does things a bit different in this sense. I had been looking for a refreshing, everyday shampoo that cleanses thoroughly without leaving any residue and is yet gentle not to cause further dryness to the length of my hair. I was given the Daily Shampoo since my long, dry hair will not be able to take the Clarifying Shampoo and the other, the gentler one will grease up my scalp. I was also given a sample of Dramatic Moisture Conditioner which I can use as a daily conditioner and also as a hair mask. it was recommended since I have somewhat dry hair that is long and thick, hence the need to turn up the moisture level even though I was told that I didn't have such thick hair, the Super Condition would have worked just fine. While I have some reservations about the conditioner per se and thought that there are better conditioners out there, I simply love the shampoo.
How the shampoo looks and feels
The shampoo comes in this sleek, tall packaging that really fits well into the decor of my zen bathroom. The liquid itself is an almost transparent blue color (one of my favourite colors so I find it really appealing) and has a texture that is slightly thinner than your usual dish-washing liquid. The scent is almost negligible but if you stop to really take in a whiff,it has a rather clean, minty smell. This shampoo contains spearmint as a freshener, thus making this a excellent choice for an early morning pick-me-up.It almost smells like the mint shampoo from Origins, just more subtle. Because of its subtle scent, I hev no fear of it clashing with my favorite perfume.
The shampoo does not create tons of lather (I have learned that shampoos that generate lots of lather are usually the harshest) but you can still get the refreshing feeling from the smell and feel of the spearmint on your scalp. Ahh! I love that feeling! Professionals often advise cleansing, rinsing, and cleansing and rinsing a second time but I find that unnecessary and wasteful (especially since this shampoo is suppossed to cost quite a bundle) as it rinses well. It does not leave hair literally squeaky clean like many other brands do, and I'm thankful for that. After that I used the Dramatic Moisture conditioner by following the clear instructions on the back. It comes in a pale purple color which is also one of my favourite colors and is contained in the same kind of container as the shampoo.
After just one use, my hair behaves better. One always have to wait for a couple of months to really see an improvement in hair condition but a good pair of shampoo and conditioner makes hair behave better after just one wash. My hair didn't feel dry and that translates to less frizz and flyaways. My bangs and hair near the top of my head also did not turn into a a lump of grease after dinner even though I spent a couple of hours preparing an elaborate dinner for friends at my Uni hall with all that grease and smoke. In fact, my hair moves with ease, remains sleek with just a tad of body, which is the way I like my hair. My friends even asked me what I did to my hair that day!
As I mentioned earlier, I recently went for the big cut. Out of boredom, three weeks ago, I went to a new hairdresser and told her to "just chop it all off". After having long hair so almost four years, my hair is now a funky style, heavily layered at the back to take off that thickness and the overall length is just above the chin. Okay so I still have an oily scalp, but at least all the dryness is gone since I got rid of the bulk of my hair. Yesterday, I tried the Daily Shampoo without the conditioner and guess what? My hair looks fine. I can unabashedly say it actually looks great, even without conditioner. The shampoo is so mild that if you have shorter hair, that may be all that you need to care for your hair, with maybe a conditioning 2-3 times a week.
Who should really, really try this
- People who want to protect their chemically-treated hair. This promises to be "kind to colored and processed hair" which is a good thing since the color-protecting lines of other brands out there are simply too moisturizing for oily scalps like mine; and
- People who want an effective, refreshing, everyday shampoo for their normal-to-oily scalps without abusing their drier hair. This shampoo really takes the frustration out of choosing hair care for "schizopherenic" hair.
Who will do better with either one of the two other shampoos in the line
- People with very oily scalps and have no problems with dry hair.(Even though dry hair with an extremely dry scalp can, theorectically, fix their problem with a moisturizng conditioner.)
- Those with dry scalp and dry hair and do not like to cleanse hair on a daily basis.
Anything else?
It is usually recommended that everyone, no matter the scalp or hair type, use a deep cleansing shampoo like the Exceptionally Clean Shampoo once a week to remove residue of styling aids, mineral build-up and pollutants. It is also beneficial to use a deeply moisturizing conditioner once a week or so. Clinique's Dramatic Moisture is developed with that purpose in mind.
Ingredients of Clinique Daily Wash Everyday Shampoo:
purified water, lauramidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium myristoyl, peg 60 almond glycerides, isostearmidopropyl morpholine lactate, hydroxyethyl behenamidopropyl dimonium chloride, hexylene glycol, glycerin, aloe barbadensis extract, green tea extract, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, panthenol, hydrolyzed soy protein, cinnamidoproplitrimonium chloride, tocopherol, rosemary, polyquarternium-16, dimethicone copolyol isostearate, spearmint, sodium chloride, benzophenone-4, citric acid, bht, disodium edta, copper, imidazolidinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben, violet 2.
* Note that it does not contain sodium laureth/ lauryl sulphate which is extremely drying on all kinds of hair. Given that 80% of shampoos out there contain this, Clinique Daily Shampoo is a good choice for most people.*
And of course...my only misgiving about this shampoo...
It costs way too much for me! Clinique's Facial Soap easily lasts over a year but this shampoo which comes in a 200ml bottle costs the same but only lasts a month. But for its superb qualities, I will continue buying this. Of course it helps that I no longer use conditioner on a daily basis!
