| lydia_rain's Full Review: Clip On Magna Doodle by Fisher Price |
What It Is:
Fisher-Price Clip-on Magna DoodleŽ is a much smaller version of the classic Magna Doodle toy. The one that we own has a bright blue frame with a green back, red eraser bar and magnetic pen, and a yellow clip. Not including the clip, the toy measures 5 inches high and 6 inches across--the drawing screen measures about 3 inches high and 4 inches across.
For those who aren't familiar with Magna Doodle toys, there is a drawing screen that you can write on with a magnetic pen. As you "write", the magnetic pen makes marks show up on the screen. When you are ready to start a new picture, you push the eraser bar up and back down the left side to remove the markings. [The eraser bar is located in different places on different versions of the Magna Doodle.] Also, on this toy, there is a slot at the top in which to store the pen. As the name Fisher-Price Clip-on Magna DoodleŽ implies, this version of the Magna Doodle has a giant yellow clip at the top. I assume that this clip is for attaching to a stroller or diaper bag--we have never used this feature.
How We Got One:
Some close friends of our family have a grandson who is the same age as my son. Their grandson lives out of town, but he always sends a gift via his grandparents for Henry's birthday and Christmas. Our friends brought this gift to us at church, and we opened it right before the Sunday service. My 3.75 year-old Henry took an immediate liking to it and wanted to play with it. This toy did not need any batteries, so we opened the Fisher-Price Clip-on Magna DoodleŽ, and Henry started writing and erasing, writing and erasing. Next, he slid the pen into the pen-slot at the top, then took it back out, then put it back again. Henry was entertained throughout the entire church service, and best of all--the Fisher-Price Clip-on Magna DoodleŽ does not make any sounds or light up or do anything else obnoxious.
What It Does for Us:
As I mentioned previously, the Fisher-Price Clip-on Magna DoodleŽ entertains my 4-year-old during church. I have kept it in my church tote-bag since the day we opened it at church--it is the only place Henry plays with it. I usually wait until the sermon begins before I let him play with it. Although he still likes to remove and replace the pen in the slot, he has also decided that it is fun to turn the toy upside-down (so he is looking at the backside) and write on it from the front--[does that make sense?] The toy is transparent, so the markings that are dark on the front are actually light when you look through the back. Henry likes to "write" on the entire screen, so that it is completely light through the back, then he erases it and starts again.
Overall Reaction:
The Fisher-Price Clip-on Magna DoodleŽ is one of the best, most useful, entertaining toys that we have received as a gift. I could not be more pleased. I also believe that this toy will grow with my child, as he gets older--I can write math problems or fill-in-the-blank words on it. That is--until the preacher begins catering his sermons to small children, then I'll make Henry listen.
