| dlstewart's Full Review: Clotilde Hardwood Ruler Rack with 5 Grooves |
I love to sew and quilt. I also love sewing gadgets! I'm like a magpie that has to have the pretty shiny glittery object when I'm anywhere near sewing and quilting notions. The same holds true with acrylic rulers. I can't resist them, have too many of them, and they were in danger of becoming harmed or lost. Enter this Clotilde Hardwood Ruler Rack with 5 Grooves. What a different it has made.
Description
This ruler rack is made from hardwood and measures 4" deep x 20" long x 5/8" tall. The wood is smooth in a light-to-medium finish. The corners are rounded, and the top of the wood base has five grooves along the length. The bottom of the base has four non-skid feet.
My Experiences
I am so lucky. I had been searching for a better way to store my acrylic ruler collection. Stuffing them in a tote bag kept them in one location. However, the rulers rubbed against each other and weren't in any type of easy-to-grab order.
Then a few years ago, I started to see these nice wooden acrylic ruler holders. Except, at the time, they were expensive. Plus, the size of those racks was larger than this one, so it would have meant an investment in sewing area space. So I struggled along with my unorganized ruler hoard.
My luck turned when a fellow quilter donated this ruler rack to our quilt guild's "yard sale". Best yet, this ruler had a price tag of $2.00 on it! How could I go wrong? I snatched up my bargain and rushed it home.
This ruler holder is perfect for me. I own a Quilter's Dream Sewing Table, so there is plenty of room at the back of the table for this size ruler holder. My acrylic rulers easily fit in the slots. I own several different brands of acrylic rulers, too: Omnigrid, Fiskars, Salem, Patchwork Place, and a few other makes. The shapes vary from large rectangular rulers to small squares.
I placed the larger rectangular rulers at the back of this holder. They measure 24" long and extend a bit beyond the edges of this 20" long rack. However, the ruler is stable and stays in the groove. The smaller rulers are in the slots closest to me, while the larger rulers are at the back. Two or three smaller rulers can also fit in the same groove. Being an acrylic ruler collector, I own more rulers than could fit in the slots. No problem. The grooves are spaced far enough apart so that I can sneak a few rulers between the ones already in the grooves. No problem!
Since acrylic rulers are clear with colored markings, I found some of my longer rulers at the back difficult to spot. Easy solution. I had a narrow Olfa self-healing cutting mat that is about the same size as the rulers. I slipped the mat vertically into one of the grooves so that it sat behind the last ruler. Now all the rulers are easily visible.
This ruler rack has never fallen over ... even with two active cats who like their share of space on my sewing table. Occasionally the cats will push their paws against the holder, trying to gain even more space for themselves, but the rack doesn't shift much.
When I saw the quilter who donated this ruler rack to the yard sale, I asked her why she didn't like it. The only reason this rack did not work for her was that her living space is limited, and this rack was too large.
As a side note, if you feel this ruler rack with the five grooves would not offer you enough space, I have seen larger ruler holders that are deeper and with more slots. If you have the space, larger ruler holders are available.
Purchasing
Clotilde sells this rack for $14.98. Compared to other wooden ruler racks that I've seen, this price is good.
Summary
This Clotilde Hardwood Ruler Rack has made organizing my sewing space a lot easier. My acrylic rulers are now sitting vertically in this rack. They are easy to see and grab. Also, I know instantly where to find the rulers, and I am sure the rulers are staying nicer longer since they aren't bumping against each other in that tote bag. For me, this was an excellent purchase!
