| gjacks's Full Review: Cobra Electronics ESD 9000 Radar Detector |
The Cobra 9000 series radar detector is just that, a radar detector. It doesn't have all of the fancy options that many of the other higher priced radar detectors have, but it does the basic job it was created to do.
This particular radar detector has the basic options that basically every other radar detector has. Such as:
1. 4 different radar signals. These include X-band, K-Band, Ka Superwide, and VG-2 Alert System.
2. 3 laser signals. These are LTI 20-20, Ultra Lyte, and ProLaser.
3. 2 safety systems. These are Safety Alert and Strobe Alert.
What do these basic options do, you ask? Well, here are a few of the things you can expect this radar detector to warn you of:
1. You get warnings from emergency vehicles and road hazards when the systems are equipped with Safety Alert or Strobe Alert systems. This may not work in smaller towns that do not have this technology, but most of the larger towns and cities have this available.
2. The VG-2 Alert System provides immunity from this radar. This also warns you when this laser is being used.
3. This detector has a mute switch. I personally use this setting at night when my kids are asleep and we are travelling. The mute setting allows me to see when a radar is detected, but not hear it. This allows my children to keep sleeping.
4. The City / Highway switch allows you to tune out many alarms due to sensors at businesses by using the City setting. With the highway setting, you will pick up anything and everything. This almost works too well. I have had the detector go off out in the middle of nowhere and never see any policemen of anything that would have a radar.
5. A last advantage that this radar detector has is the dimming option. The lights are quite bright, especially at night. The dimming option allows you to decrease the amount of light coming from the detector for night driving.
In my experience with this particular radar detector, I have been nothing but pleased. I have yet to get a ticket while this is in use (knock on wood) and don't plan too in the future until new technology brings a different type of laser.
If you are looking for a basic radar detector to protect you from getting tickets, this is a great one to buy. It will warn you in plenty of time and will not hurt you too badly in the pocketbook.
