| Sir_Hacksalot's Full Review: Cobra Gravity Back Fairway Woods |
Alright, Cobra dropped the name "King" off their lineup, and rightly so, their products have stunk as of late. The Gravity Back irons are mediocre at best, and they just seemed unable to come up with a winner like the original King Cobra irons.
I recently had my Steelhead 4+ "hijacked" by my dad, so I am hunting for a new fairway wood. I have my choice narrowed down to TWO, the Ping i3 and the Cobra Gravity Back Tour fairway wood.
The club I played was a 14.5* non-offset model with a stiff graphite shaft. First off, the club is just flat out BEAUTIFUL. Second off, it sets up nicely, and is very square at address, and does not have any of the horrid looking "aerodynamics" of the older King Cobra woods. The club REALLY reminds me of the greatest fairway woods of all times, the Titleist PT series. Off the tee, I was getting about 235 to 245 yards off the tee, and able to draw it at will, in fact, it seemed to get out of control a bit and turned into a nasty hook, but that is an OPERATOR problem. The feel of the club is INCREDIBLY solid, but does not feel dead like the Titleist 975 series of woods, and the ball does have that feeling of JUMPING off the clubhead.
Off the deck and out of the rough are not a problem thanks to the weight chip, the ball gets up quickly, but does NOT balloon. One shot that strikes a memory is a 235 yard shot that requires a good 225 or carry to clear a water hazard. Normally, I am wimping out and laying up, but I found that I carried the hazard with ease, and was just off the back of the green on a short par 5.
One downside I have for this club is the shaft. Most OEM's use junk/cheap shafts. If you check my bag, you will see that nearly EVERY club I have has been reshafted to FIT ME. Well, in an effort to reduce club head twisting, Cobra used a .350 tip shaft. This GREATLY limits your choice in shafts. On the upside, my FAVORITE shaft, the True Temper EI-70 is available in a .350 tip. I would LOVE to see this club with that shaft, in fact, if the i3 does not work out, you will see a GB with that green shaft in it.
All in all, this is a good club. Street price is $199.99, which is less than the Steelhead + and Ping i3 woods. Throw in $50 for a new shaft, and you've got a lethal weapon on the course.
