| DeRango's Full Review: Cobra XRS 9960G Radar Detector |
We would call it the Cobra XRS 9960G Radar Detector. You know there are very few electronics that don’t incorporate an every gadget and doohickey into one handy dandy expensive toy and this is no exception. This particular radar detector is equipped with both GPS features and cutting edge radar detection and position alerts.
Out of the Box Luckily the unit comes with everything you need to get started; including a connection to allow a USB hookup into the PC or laptop which will allow for updates and uploads. The unit comes standard with everything you need to get started, which means no extra purchasing of cords, cables, or software.
At a Glance The unit gets some points for maintaining a sleek/sharp appeal while complementing your dash with an added feature of a digital compass. Having this really helps when traveling in my work vehicle as I typically need to know which direction I’m heading when searching out new job sites. The units digital LCD doesn’t distract but rather sits calmly on the dash with pertained updates and alerts, which by the way can be increased/decreased or even customized.
Personal Experience 15 Band protection means X Band, K Band, Ka Superwide, Ku Band Detection, VG-2 Radar, all types of current lasers all the old technology and even the new stuff. I personally love the Photo enforcement alerts, which keeps me thinking about “trying to beat the red light.” Wow what a cool features it flashes green at first saying photo enforcement, then yellow as you draw near, then finally red as you approach it closely. Also certain areas are programmed as caution or alert areas, which means in my opinion where the little cops like to hide or have been known to watch, so it’s like a warning before you even get the radar detection.
In my subdivision we have those special speed units that clock your speed on light poles, and provide a digital read out of how fast you are going. Well I noticed the first time I plugged it in and used it that it caught the K-band alert from over 500 feet around a bend, which I was pretty impressed with. Simply because you can’t just get tagged until you’re actually seen by the radar gun, but the fact that it was reading the signal was pretty cool.
Honestly I like that it keeps my watching my speed and it makes me more of a cautious driver, it is kind of like having a little guy next to you on your shoulder saying hey remember they like to hide here, and Oh! Watch out for this intersection it has cameras, and wait remember last time you came through here and there was one waiting around the corner. It even has a feature where you can program locations and set alerts so next time it will remind you that hey! SLOW DOWN, there might be someone waiting around this bend to nail you. Some really good ideas and new features that make this radar detector more than just something you have on your dash which makes annoying noise.
One kind of annoying issue I had, was it simply seemed to be constantly going off with alerts, and photo areas, and this and that… Almost as if it was telling me EVERYTHING that was going on, but after awhile I just adjusted the settings to personalize what I wanted to hear and what I didn’t. Overall it worked out just fine after messing around with it for about a week.
Overall The bottom line is that this detector/GPS unit is made by a very reputable company that provides both cutting edge technology and high end quality when it comes to radar detectors. I personally would recommend this particular unit to most people looking to either upgrade the current unit they have or are in the market for a solid radar detector with good features and a quality name. I like the photo alert intersection features, the GPS compass, and the ability to customize EXACTLY what you want it to do for the user (you).
*I received this product from the manufacture in exchange I gave my honest opinion and review.
