Gourmet Coffee Taste, Made Right In The Mug, Without Spending A Fortune!

Written: Aug 06 '05 (Updated Aug 06 '05)
Pros:Makes great froth, so drinks taste "gourmet", but don't cost a fortune!
Cons:The froth doesn't last very long, so drink quickly!
The Bottom Line: Recommended for anyone who enjoys gourmet coffee drinks, but not the price, or the hassle of a large machine.

This product was designed for people like me. I LOVE all of those great-tasting gourmet coffee products. You know the ones I’m talking about - they have fancy names like frappa-choca-mocha-chino, and they’re more like a dessert than a beverage. But, if you’re also like me, you’re reluctant to spend a fortune at the coffee shop. So you make your coffee at home, using flavored coffee beans, and flavored creamers, and syrups. But you’re still missing what you really crave… the best part of that expensive gourmet coffee drink… the frothed milk. All that thick, velvety, smooth, foamy milk. Maybe you buy one of those large, expensive, full-sized cappuccino/espresso makers. But they're a hassle to use... they're simply too much work for a single cup of coffee! And that’s where the Coffee Magic Frothing Cup comes in!

What a great concept… Froth your milk right in the cup! You can make warm froth, or chilled. You can use any kind of milk you want. It’s simple and simply delicious.

What exactly is the Coffee Magic Frothing Cup?

It’s a 16 oz acrylic mug that sits atop a motorized base. The base takes two double A batteries. I use rechargables. Protruding from the base, into the mug, is a frothing whisk. This is a small, circular coil, approximately one inch in diameter. When you press the on/off button located on the base, the motor whirs (not TOO loudly!), and the whisk spins - extremely quickly. The spinning coil aerates the milk, turning it into a thick, foamy froth. There is also a convenient travel lid. So you make the froth right in the mug, add your other ingredients, put the travel lid on, and you've got your coffee "to go". Or - you can transfer the contents to another mug, if you prefer.

OK - So how do you make the froth?

For chilled froth: Place approximately 2 oz. of cold milk (fat-free works best) into the mug. Be sure to add enough milk so that the whisk is completely submerged. Tilt the cup one direction approximately 45 degrees. Then press the on/off button for 10 seconds. Release the button. Tilt the cup the opposite direction. Then press the on/off button for another 5 seconds.

For warm froth: Place approximately 2 oz. of warm or hot milk (whole milk or 2% works best) into the mug. Be sure to add enough milk so that the whisk is completely submerged. Tilt the cup one direction approximately 45 degrees. Then press the on/off button for 20 seconds. Release the button. Tilt the cup the opposite direction. Then press the on/off button for another 10 seconds.

When you’re done, the froth will take up approximately half of the mug. You can now make your favorite gourmet coffee drink right in the mug, or spoon the froth into other mugs.

How do you make that delicious gourmet coffee drink?

The instruction book comes with directions for cappuccino, latte, mocha, mexican coffee, viennese coffee, caramel latte, and whiskey coffee. All of the recipes are similar - you start with the froth, then add a few ingredients, then pulse the on/off button to mix. For example:

Cappuccino:
1.Make some cold or warm froth.
2.Add sugar or artificial sweetener (if desired) on top of the froth.
3.Pour hot coffee into the mug until full.
4.Pulse the on/off button 5 to 10 times to mix the contents.
5.Top with powdered flavoring, such as cinnamon, chocolate flakes, or nutmeg.

A latte is made the same way, except before step 2, pour 4 oz. of cold or hot milk into the mug.

A mocha is the same as a cappuccino except before step 3, add 2 teaspoons of mocha flavored chocolate syrup, and top with whipped cream and powdered chocolate.

You get the idea… the rest of the coffee recipes are all similar.

There are also non-coffee recipes as froth has other uses as well: For instance, whipped dessert topping, frothy chocolate or strawberry milk, and “orange cream delight” which combines froth with orange juice.

But how does it really compare to an expensive coffee drink?

If you drink your coffee rather quickly after it’s made, you won’t be disappointed. The taste is delightful. The froth is perfect. It’s thick, and foamy just as it should be. The problem comes if you linger for too long. Drink too slowly, and you’ll notice the thick froth getting thinner. I suppose it’s because the froth was made only with aeration, not with steam and air, as a full-sized machine would use. After about 10 minutes, you’re left with a tasty coffee drink, but no more froth. You can pulse the on/off button again, and the coffee will foam up a bit, but you won’t get real froth back.

So --- is this a good product or not?

I say Yes! In just a couple minutes you can have a delicious coffee drink, made right at home, at very minimal cost. Hot or cold, using a variety of flavors, you can enjoy all of your favorite drinks. But - drink them quickly. Or use an extra mug, and make additional froth which you can spoon into your drink, after the original froth is gone.

Care, cleaning, and other notes

The mug separates from the base. The mug and lid are dishwasher-safe, but the base is not. Simply rinse the whisk and base under running water. This mug is NOT meant to be used in the microwave. Unfortunately, there is no battery indicator. If your batteries are weak, the motor will not be as loud, and the whisk will not spin as quickly as it should. As a result, the froth will not be nearly as thick as it should be.

I bought mine at one of those "As Seen On TV" kiosks at my local mall, for $9.99, and have used it probably 20 times since. The same mall has a fancy coffee shop, where $9.99 would buy two coffee drinks!
