Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener / John Wayne Can Opener My Experience with the Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener The original design was simple and has never changed. It's very rare but occasionally they make something right the first time around and the G.I. can opener was one and the M-50 (.50 Caliber / MA-2) was another. In this case the design can still be found but the steel it's made with is cheap and tinny. The old original P-38 was issued in C and K rations were made of a quality hard steel and they'd last a life time. I still have my grandfathers John Wayne can opener from WWII and it still works fine.
Description
The Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener is a very small, inexpensive manual can opener. It's a small two inch thin but sturdy band of metal with a small notch. Above this notch is a foldable fang shaped blade about ½ an inch long. They all come with a small hole stamped through it. This is used to secure the tool to dog tags, key chains or 550 cord secured to your Ruck-sack, Molle-pack or backpack.
Directions
The notch fits just under the rim of the can. Apply some leverage and pressure to puncture the lid. Then walk the opener around the can. The Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener works on any can. I have opened everything from sardines to large coffee cans with the Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener. To get proficient with a G.I. can openers takes some practice. However anyone can use the Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener if need be and eventually get the job done. Be careful not to cut yourself as it creates some sharp jagged edges. Clean in boiling water.
Features / Specifications
~ Very small, compact, lightweight and folds. ~ Reliable and not likely to ever break or fail ~ Inexpensive and found at any sporting goods outlet. ~ Two inches long, ½ an inch wide and 1/8 an inch thick when folded and not in use Conclusion The Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener emulates the larger P-51 in size. It's larger than the P-38 and easier to use. I believe one should have several of these little tools around. I keep them in my back-pack, camping gear, tent box, hunting box, glove compartment and emergency / survival kit. I like any practical tool that can be hand run when the power goes out or I head for the wilderness. They are so small and inexpensive it's worth buying a couple anyway. Someday you'll need a can opener and remember you have your Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener in your back-pack, glove box or emergency kit. The Coghlan's G.I. Can Opener is a practical tool for any Boy Scout, camper, hunter, fisherman, survivalist, soldier or Marine. Lean and Mean Review © 2008 Joe McMaster
