marcman's Full Review: Coil by Toad the Wet Sprocket (Modern Rock)
"Coil" is Toad the Wet Sprocket's last album of all original material. After "Coil", Toad broke up and they released one more album called "P.S." which is essentially a best-of album with a few unreleased songs thrown in. So, "Coil" is really their last real album.
"Coil" is one of my favorite albums. There were no huge hit singles from "Coil", but I think the songs are top-notch nonetheless. If you're looking for hit singles, try "Fear" (which has "Walk on the Ocean" and "All I Want") or "Dulcinea" (which has "Something's Always Wrong" and "Fall Down"). In my opinion, the music and lyrics on "Coil" are on par with these other albums.
"Coil" is a tad darker-sounding than other Toad albums. Not that they were a happy-sounding band... The album kicks off with "Whatever I Fear" -- a great tune about being your own worst enemy:
seeing myself this way
i am a monster i believe
and seeing is believing
is there no doubt left
when i wake up i poison myself
and poison leaves no appetite
i sicken myself so much
i sicken myself so
Then there's songs about pent-up emotions ("Dam Would Break") and desires ("Desire"). On the more positive side, there is a tribute to the person that puts up with all our flaws ("Come Down") and an inspiring song about scrapping your failures and starting anew ("Throw It All Away"):
with the time i waste on the life i never had
i could've turned myself into a better man
there is nothing you can buy
and there is nothing you can save
to fill the hole inside your heart
so throw it all away
Great songs. Great lyrics. The only bad thing about this album is knowing that it's the last one from this great band.
However, if you like what you hear on "Coil", there's plenty of other good albums to buy. Start with "Dulcinea" and "Fear" from Toad (there are others too, but these are my favorites). Once you've got all of the Toad albums, check out the debut solo album from singer/guitarist Glen Phillips, called "Abulum" (read my epinion at http://marcman.epinions.com/content_19691900548) and Lapdog (www.lapdogmusic.com), which has drummer Randy Guss and lead guitarist Todd Nichols from Toad (they had bassist Dean Dinning for a while but he has left to do voice-over work).
